We've only been to Fort Lauderdale once, for two nights this past February, and we stayed at the Pelican Grand and loved it. I don't know how "upscale" it is, but our room (oceanview, I believe on the 7th floor) was large and very comfortable. One thing we really enjoyed was that it sits directly on the beach, while all the other hotels were across the street. We had breakfast both mornings on the big back porch overlooking the ocean. (I did notice that there are mixed reviews on trip advisor, though.)

We know how to do not-so-run-down, and don't welcome college kids so much.

I stayed at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort about a month ago and I would definitely class it as an "upscale" hotel. It has a "private" beach and a huge free-form pool area. They do have a kids program, so they must cater to families, but I think it is too expensive for college kids.

The Marriott is also ON the beach; the Ritz is across the street but with beach accessibility. The Ritz gets somewhat better reviews than the Marriott but who knows how many people are "dazzled" by the place...except that German poster (on TA) who took pictures of every Ritz rust spot and for that money, they could have invested in a little Rustoleum
