By all means check out Hawaiian's website for special (affordable) First Class fares from the West Coast to the Islands - www.hawaiianair.com.
Believe me, FC is really a nice way to begin a vacation trip to Hawaii.
For the portion of the trip between your home airport and the West Coast check sites for both the traditional and low cost carriers (there are fare sales galore these days). Also, "main cabin" on the traditional carriers are akin to the section on the galleys where the slaves who manned the oars were "accomodated". (Even the food is similar - peanuts & water.)

I can't count the number of SFO-HNL roundtrips we've made -- but the wisest thing we did was switch to Hawaiian Air.
Your vacation begins at the ticket counter, and is reinforced with the first "Aloha" you hear when you step onto the plane.
Good food, aloha service -- and if you're lucky enough to upgrade to First Class (can be done at the ticket counter, on a space available basis, for a reduced rate) -- do it!
