Union Station

Does anyone know if it is reasonable to walk from the Greyhound Bus Station (1005 1st Street, N.E.) to Union Station (50 Massachusetts Ave) during the day, or should we take a taxi? Thanks

Unfortunately it appears City fathers do not hold high regard for people visiting the City of Angels. No I would not walk it. The Grayhound station is in the middle of a very isolated industrial area inhabited by homeless, vagrants. Walking would take you about 15 minutes. it is about a two minute cab ride should not cost you more than $5.00. Take the Cab!!

Our City Fathers do not place very high visitors arriving by bus to the City of Angels. The Grayhound station is located in the middle of an isolated even during the day) industrial area inhabited by vagrants and shadow people. Not a very enjoyable walk, but a very short cab ride. Should cost you under $6.00.

You can walk, provided you're not encumbered with a lot of luggage (it's close to a mile) and you exercise the usual city precautions--be alert, secure your valuables. Most of the walk is along North Capitol St., from K Street south to about E St., and a lot of govt. employees will be out and about. The only "questionable" area is right around the bus station.

You can walk it (less than 15 minutes), but I wouldn't do it at night. During the day, it's no problem.

I used to work near there. During the day, it's fine. There are actually quite a few office buildings in the area. However, I wouldn't dare walk it in the evening.

Part of the answers appear to relate to Los Angeles, while others relate to the Union Station in Washington DC. When posting on this site, it's important to point out in which city you're discussing. Too often, there are multiple locations with the same name.

Take a cab!!! It doesn't matter what time, day or night. I used to live right there ... it is a very dangerous area. The Greyhound Station used to be downtown, in a bad area. They moved, and unbelievably, it's worse now. Cabs are so, so cheap in DC ... don't be stupid. The other posters obvioulsy do not live in that neighborhood ... there are no federal employees even walking on N. Capitol (they are confused ... the GSA builidng is very close to Mass. Avenue where you're headed). Take a taxi.

Chicago cabs are very easy to catch at Union Station. The fare should be reasonable too for where you are going.

Pete, do you have any idea how expensive it would be to take a cab to Chicago from DC?

Sorry about the confusion- I was referring to Washington D.C.'s Union Station; I thought it would be clear given that I provided the street addresses. I highly doubt that the addresses are identical in LA and Chicago. I have posted on this site numerous times, and I apologize for neglecting to place DC somewhere in the post. However, before crapping on me for forgetting details, perhaps you should pay attention to the details I provided (i.e. the street addresses).

Actually, X, you are confused. GSA is located at 18th and F streets. the Gvoernment Printing Office is on N. Capitol. Actually, if Anonymous walks straight up 1st Street from the Greyhound station, he will come upon many office buildings, inlcluding where I worked, and many other and workers. That route will take him directly alongside of Union Station. Anonymous can then enter Union Station at the First Street entrance. It is safe routed during the day.

Well, GSA, GPO, who cares!! Take a taxi and avoid the unsafe walk along 1st NE. Much of the walk from the bus station is grimey and unsafe ... take a look at the characters who hang out down there ... one tends to see fewer of them up on CH, and certainly not around Md. Ave. on the Senate side. The neighborhood that one would walk through heading up to Mass. Ave. and the 1st Street entrance is just not safe. Give the person a break ... they will probably have a suitcase. Stop trying to save them $5 and think safety. If you have worked on CH during the day, but have never lived in that part of NE DC, perhaps you're the one who is mistaken. Anyway, enough of this silly debate ... take the taxi or walk. Personally, I'd take the taxi, as a former resident.

To X - Don't be so touchy. So you were wrong - no big deal. "The other posters obvioulsy do not live in that neighborhood ... there are no federal employees even walking on N. Capitol (they are confused ... the GSA builidng is very close to Mass. Avenue where you're headed)." The Bureau of Labor Statistics is right there at Mass & N. Cap and the feds are out and about walking at lunch every day!

I have just come back from a meeting at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)which is located at 888 First St., N.E., about 2 blocks from the Greyhound station and along the route from the Greyhound station to Union Station. The entrance to Union Station is only about another 2 blocks farther. During the business day this is as safe as anywhere as there are employees of and visitors to the FERC on the streets, as well as employees of and visitors to the other businesses between the FERC and Union Station. If you are doing this on a weekend rather than a weekday, there will be fewer people, but being a resident I would still probably walk it, depending upon the amount of luggage. Just walk down First Street (making sure you're headed in the right direction)--there's no need to go to North Capitol which is out of you way.

Well, gosh, it was GPO, not GSA - so what ... LOL! The point really is that folks who don't even live in NE are advising someone who's a stranger with a bag to walk in NE, a most dangerous area. I have lived there, and had to move for just that reason. "Anonymous" ... if you're still reading all this silly mish mash ... and IF you have decided to walk, by all means do walk. But remember, some of the folks advising you to walk didn't even realize it was DC you were asking about. Post an address ... I'll send you the darn $5 for the taxi and something for the tip as well. It's not an ego thing, but a safety thing, believe it or not. I must now depart this amazing thread ... best regards to all. And welcome to DC.

I have walked to Union Station from the Greyhound Bus Station with a small roller bag in Washington, D.C. a number of times (maybe 4?) during the day. Not once was I mugged, I didn't see any gangs, hoodlums...I vaguely recall seeing one homeless person once and typically a few government employees. REAL SCARY. I probably would not walk it at night as you have to go under a bridge and I'd imagine it's quite deserted.

My advice...walk it or taxi it during the day...up to you, judge by how much luggage you have...15 minute walk with a medium hill. Taxi it at night.
