U Chicago, Amaze-ing Chicago, cheezborgers
Will be in Chicago in 2 days and would very much appreciate feedback on the following places:
Best Western Inn of Chicago
University of Chicago campus tour
Robie House
Amaze-ing Chicago attraction and cheezborgers from Billy Goat Tavern at Navy Pier
Fluky's (in the Magnificent Meal food court)
Italian beef sandwiches from Portillo's (original location at Ontario and La Salle)

If you go to Robie House and Univ. of Chicago you will be visiting a part of town that is less "touristed" and that is good. I have enjoyed the Robie House. Never have taken a tour at the University, but could be interesting. Have breakfast in Hyde Park- there is at least one classic cafeteria that gives you a good Hyde Park experience. Can't remember the name right now, but am sure Chicago natives will tell you. (Since you are interested in the Robie House you might enjoy seeing FLW's home and studio in Oak Park. Very beautiful, and a number of FLW homes in the immediate vicinity. Easy to get to Oak Park on the el.) And yes, I agree with the previous poster about going to the original Billy Goat Tavern instead.

Remember the Billy Goat from our many days in Chicago. Do give it a try. If you do go out to Oak Park, have Italian beef at Johnnie's on North Avenue in (I think) Melrose Park. It's da best! I think Fluky's is not as good as it used to be---maybe a current resident could offer another suggestion. Deep dish pizza at Uno's, Due's, or the little place on Superior Street---name escapes me. Very hot in Chicago right now--be prepared!

If going to the original Portillo's is important to you, stay away from that heinous Ontario street corridor (aka the Tourist Trap) and head out to the western suburbs. The original Portillo's is NOT at Ontario and Clark - it's in Villa Park, and has been since for at least 30 years(and there were many others out there long before the River North location popped up in the mid 1990s). Yummy chicken sandwiches - can't comment on the beef.
If you're looking for great Italian beef at an original location with a little history, go to Al's on Taylor St (just southwest of the Loop - again, skip the Ontario St. location) and Mario's Italian Lemonade across the street for an Italian ice (it's just a dinky little pop stand). Trust me - these are both wonderful places with lots of Chicago character.
