don't forget to hit up McSorley's while you're in NYC. it's on 2nd ave and 7th Street, and it's the oldest bar in manhattan. Closes at 1am, and only serves two drinks:
Dark or Light.
You have to buy two at a time, and i believe their $2 each unless prices changed.
I also recommend Ulysses downtown, but it's out of the way and not worth the trip unless you're already in the area.
Lots of fun places in NYC, just browse around citysearch and some happy hour sites. you'll find plent of bars that are not expensive.
Corner bistro is a MUST for cheap drinks and the BEST burger in town.

Hell's Kitchen is the name for the area just west of Times Square. Your hotel is on the border. I don't know Garvey's, but there are too many better options.
Hopstop.com is a great website to help you get from Point A to point B. It will give you options for subway, bus, an estimate of cost of taxi (within Manhattan) etc. but you should have the address for best results. Nothing is that "far" in Manhattan, but the east village is not close to your hotel. What isn't far is Chelsea, due south in the teens and 20's.
menupages.com is a good website for restaurants.
sheckys.com and murphguide.com for bars
NY Magazine (nymetro.com) has a decent search engine for nightlife, shopping etc. Their cheap guide might be helpful to you
