We have heard a lot of great things abut the Tundra Wilderness tour in Denali Park. Here's my hesitation. We arrive in Denali via a 9 hour train trip the first day. Will the 7-8 hour Tundra bus tour in Denali the following day be too much sitting? We have considered taking the on/off shuttle bus option, but are hesitant about hiking on our own. We'd like to hear from those of you who have done the consecutive train& Tundra trips.

You do NOT have to go "hiking" on your own, if on the shuttle buses, many people stay on the same bus. There is no difference in the buses as far as what is seen, stops, comparing the Toklat Shuttle Bus and Tundra Wilderness tour, going to same distance, mile 53.

My min. distance in is Eielson, mile 66.

In my opinion, I always recommend an extra day if taking the train to Denali Park. As you have found out, you have 3 long transit days. I would recommend you either add a day or rent a car.

Many people do, what you are doing, just about the bulk of cruisetours plan this way. It's up to you, if you want to continue with this plan.

I had the same concern. We are staying 2 nts at Denali Princess & 1 nt at Mt McKinley Princess but I was stunned when I saw that train ride from Whittier was 9 hours! My family is gonna freak! Oh well. Even with 2 nts at Denali the only time we can take the Tundra Wilderness Tour is the next day(after the long train ride).I think it will be fine.

I have taken the tour 3 times and highly recommend you take the one that goes further into the park - yes it is long but you do get on and off the bus and their is enough time to stretch your legs. I really would not recommend hiking on your own-your time is to short. Remember, the animals are on their own schedule -- sometimes I have seen a lot and other times barely any - so be prepared. Also take some good binculars and camera - the buses are equiped with tv screens where the guide can focus in on animals and points of interest so you can see it clearly from the bus.Enjoy
