Tropical Cocktail's
Aloha~
Just wondering, where in Hawaii, did you get your first "Unforgettable Cocktail"? Mine was at Cheeseburger in Paradise, my very first trip to Hawaii.
It was a Lava Flow,, I really knew I was in paradise, looking at my first Hawaiian sunset, listening to a band doing a rendition on "Margeritaville", and sipping my very first Lava Flow! Heaven... = )

Maybe the name "lava flow" is particularly enticing to start off a first time visit to Hawaii. Mine was also a Lava Flow. Our first trip, we had a late afternoon flight, so after checking into the hotel we headed straight to Dukes but we missed the sunset. It was dark but I wanted to "test the waters." I remember after our drinks, stepping onto the sand of Waikiki Beach and dipping my feet into the ocean to see if it felt different from the beaches back home. I felt like a giddy, little kid. If only I'd know what an addiction it'd turn into. (Hawaii..not the drinks of course! Well, maybe both

My experience is nowhere near as exotic or romantic... first thing after checking into my hotel, I run across the street to the ABC Store and buy a bottle of local rum and a carton of pass-0-guava juice. Then hit the hotel ice machine and make a pitcher of "mai tais" in my kitchenette and take it out to the pool!

1982. Age eighteen. Second trip to Hawaii. Had a delicious pineapple daquiri at a free-standing bar in the International Marketplace in Honolulu. Probably made more delicious by the "forbidden" aspect of it... (Drinking age was 21 in my home state.)

Mine was a mai tai at an open air bar at a hotel in Kona on my honeymoon in 1982. The following recipe goes with us each year when we visit Maui - we purchase all the ingredients in a local grocery store. It really takes us back!
Mai Tai
Serves 2:
2 ounces light rum
2 ounces dark rum
2 capfuls orgeat syrup (almond/sugar syrup)
2 ounces pineapple juice
2 ounces orange juice (fresh is best)
1 lime
2 tablespoons Curacao
Pack a cocktail shaker or pitcher with ice. Add rum, orgeat syrup, pineapple juice and orange juice. Shake to mix. Divide mixture into two tall glasses and squeeze ½ juice of lime into each glass. Float a scant teaspoon of Curacao over each glass. Enjoy!

The last time I went to Hawaii I checked into my hotel and couldn't wait to get my feet in the sand, so off I went down the beach - Waikiki, of course. I stopped at the Banyon Bar at the Moana - right on the beach - and ordered a drink - "A Day at the Beach" - which hit the spot and was appropriate for my inaugural drink for that vacation. Many others followed over the next two weeks - all just as yummy (or more so!) - Lava Flows were my favorite, but I also liked the fu-fu-ie pink one (kind of like a pink pina colada) at the Royal Hawaiian and a Blue Tahiti at the Waikiki Marriott.
