Weather in San Francisco is pretty much the same year round, although our Springs and Falls can be unusually warm (high 70s low 80s). I would plan on 60-70 during the day, 40-50 at night. Best to wear layers and bring only one pair of shorts. This is not really a shorts city - too cold when the fog rolls in.
San Francisco is safe to walk at night in most areas. Take the normal precautions - walk with others and stay in tuned to your surroundings. We live near the Warf (on Russian Hill) and walk home late all of the time from dinner or an evening out. San Francisco is ideal for walking - we seldom drive anywhere in the city.
Enjoy!

Martha - you will love San Francisco in March. Spring is wonderful in "The City". Sharon is correct (she has lived here for 9 years) I have lived here for over 23 year and love it. Actually there is not any bad time to visit. Take sharon's adivce and dress in layers. Rembemer the fog is cold and you need a warm sweater or jacket. (we can tell the tourist by the Fishermans Wharf sweatshits they buy to keep warm). Carry a light umbrella just incase of showers. Remember that you are in a big city in a tourest area. Be safe. stay with your friends and don't answer your hotel room door unless you know who is knocking. I'm sure you know the "common sense" to travel. (watch your purse, camera, know where you are at, etc.). A few areas that you are not close to and do NOT want to go are the Western Addition, Hunters Point, and Tenderloin. Be sure to visit not only the Wharf, but also Union Square, North Beach, Chinatown, Cow Hollow (Union Street) and Pacific Heights (upper Fillmore Street). Ask the locals where they eat! Of course you want to ride a cable car, but you can take a cab around the "City" and it is not too expensive. Like Sharon said, you can walk a lot of San Francisco. Just remember we are a city of hills! Have a great time in America's favorite city! Check out San Francisco's web site and call the SF visitor center to send you a lot of great information. Have fun and enjoy "OZ".

March in San Francisco is that same as it is most other places except more so. By that I mean it is more important to have a good windbreaker and shoes that you don't mind getting wet than it is to bring shorts and a swim suit.
I would downgrade Sharon's daytime temperature rating. Expect temperatures to hover in the low to mid 60's from dawn to dusk. Temps in SF often vary by only 10 degrees. We often get rain during this month.
As for safe areas to walk, any area you would willingly go to as a tourist is safe to walk in during the day. Areas where you need to pay more attention at night are the Financial District, off the beaten path in Chinatown and Valencia Street. I would not advise seeing the Victorians on Alamo Square after dark.

I would have to agree with cp. The previous poster were a little over zealous in touting the weather in San Francisco in March. High 50's to low 60's is far more likely than 60's to 70's. Also March is in our rainy season so be prepared for some rain. You may luck out and not have any during your stay but be be prepared.
San Francisco is basically a pretty safe city. Use normal precautions and don't venture off the beaten path, especially at night.
