Trip to Maine w/infant in April

We are planning a trip in mid-April to Maine with our ten-month-old. I know that April can be tricky when it comes to weather, so we are thinking we should stay as southern as possible. Any recommendations on which town to visit? Or good resorts/cottages for children? We will likely stay in one spot for the duration of the week (though day trips are a possibility.) I am unfamiliar with the area, so any help is appreciated. Thank you!

What is the attraction in April? DW and I are going to spend a night in York Maine in late May. I'm going to find a couple of geocaches in Maine before heading south to find at least 1 in MA, RI and CT.
Are you driving your own car, a rental car or taking a train or plane to Maine?

We are driving our own car. No attraction in April specifically; it's just the time that we are able to go.

York is a good choice with children. Nice family friendly, old timey little town. Of course April isn't beach weather, but you can walk on picturesque Short Sands beach which is right in town. There is a small arcade, a salt water taffy making shop,a beautiful lighthouse, a small zoo, lots of little restaurants and shops. However, I suspect some things will be closed in April.

Portland at least has indoor things to do (museums, coffee shops, etc) if the weather is less than ideal.

I love Maine--but I don't think I would go in April.

How are you thinking of spending your days? Locals might be able to tell you if you'll run into mud season or black flies at that time.

I can't comment on the weather as we were there in mid-May (and it was still very chilly! but no mud or black flies), but we really enjoyed Portland. Great food and drink, interesting little waterfront area where you can catch a ferry, easy driving distance to beautiful coastline and lighthouses, and a significant art museum.

Off season not much will be opened.Weather is usually in the 40's and some days in the 50's. Always cooler on the coast. Maine is all about the outdoors and outdoor activities.
There is a great timeshare resort in Rockport ME that we stayed at in the spring. http://www.samosetresort.com/timeshare-condominiums/.
Discounts can be found through travelzoo or skyauction.
Great location.

Even in mid-May we found that lighthouses and lobster shacks and ice cream stands were all closed, although you could still walk around the lighthouses and their grounds. The vast majority of restaurants were open, though.

Thanks for all the input! It sounds like Maine in April is not the best idea. Maybe we will try another year. I appreciate the help!
