I wouldn't try to do the Road to Hana with only two days in Maui. Too exhausting and too much else to do. Wait until you return for a week. You will spend one day walking around Lahaina probably. Be sure and say "hi" to the giant banyan tree and stop to appreciate the history of the place. Going up Haleakala and/or visiting the Iao Valley (a magical place) would be my other picks.

brittany - have you tried the cruise section of the forum? You may get more info there about how to rent cars, what tours are available where they'll pick you up at the ship, etc.

If you have two full days on Maui, do the Road to Hana and Haleakala summit. You will also probably have time to drive to Lahaina and stroll the town.

It will be much cheaper if you can rent a car on each island. You can visit the same places as a tour would take you. But, make sure that you can get to and from the car rental place in a reasonable time. Try to find out if there are shuttles from the ship to the car rentals.

On Kauai, from where the ship will be, spend one day going each direction. West will take you toward Waimea Canyon. There are several stops along the beaches where you can stop including a blow hole, and a n old Russian fort.
Going the other direction are some nice beaches, Fern Grotto, a couple of nice waterfalls and some wet and dry caves at the end of the road just past Hanalei. I don't know how far you can get in this direction before you need to get back.

When you are at the airport baggage area, pick up the following brochures:

This Week - They usually have the brochures available for all four major islands.

Also Oahu Gold, Maui Gold, Big Island Gold and Kauai Gold

Aslo 101 Things for each island if available.

Also one that says MAPS. It has maps for all of the islands.

I've already given you info on the Hilo side - Volcanoes National Park and Akaka Falls. You will also have time to see Rainbow Falls near Hilo and Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo.

I've never been on the Kona side so can't help you there.

With ATM cards and Credit cards, there is not a great need for travelers cheques anymore.

But it wouldn't hurt anything to bring some.

I haven't used them for years, but my mother still does.

If I were taking a cruise, I'd contact Bonnie Buchanan on the Travel Talk Online Website (the 'Afloat') thread (TTOL). She comes highly recommended by friends and I've read alot of her info...seems to be aces!! Belle
