We never did the air boat ride for just the reasons you give. There was a nice boat ride from Everglades City through the mangroves and we saw lots of birds.. Shark river NP site also had plenty.

Ha! Well, I travel to Floida at least two times per year and I have been meaning to do this airboat business for a while now. But somehow the thought of flipping over in an airboat in a swamp full of gators has kept me from it. Now I realise it might not be gators but pythons!! And fire ants! Well...no thank you. I just took it off my list. I'm not terribly interested in seeing Gators, having seen my fill of them up close and personal, but might look into the park, though.

We did an airboat tour in the Everglades on our recent trip to Florida and did see a couple of alligators, lots of birds and fish. DH and I really enjoyed the ride.
