Treasure Hunting

I will be going to Corolla NC in early September. I was wondering if anyone could help me locate some places not too far out to treasure hunt. I have a detector so I will us it on the beaches, but I was also wondering where the closest place to pan for gems would be. My searches keep turning up 9-10 hours away from Corolla. With gas prices that is just too far. Or perhaps a good place to look for sharks teeth. My kids and I just love treasure hunting, so any ideas are welcome, THANKS!

Hi ojaluap - Welcome to posting on Fodors. In general, it would be to your advantage to post with a more specific title, such as 'Treasure Hunting in Corolla NC'. Some people who might be able to help you don't open posts with vague titles. Good luck.

Ojaluap - The nature of the area is that it is always changing - the land shifts (wind), the beach comes and goes (waves, storms), and much has been recently developed; historically it is a shifty place (literally)! I would think it is about the last place on earth that would harbor much in the way of treasure.

To get off the beaten path requires some effort. There isn't much land left undeveloped, and the native vegetation is very thick where it is undisturbed.

Be aware that much of the area was used for some kind of ammunition training, and there are prominent signs in at least one area that "stuff can explode" so you might want to be careful if you do run across something. LOL

Sounds like a fun hobby. Good luck. Maybe someplace on the mainland would be a better bet?

I forgot to mention that you should not be on the dunes off of a walkway. (That's obvious once you are there.)
