Traversing Denali Highway ( Alaska Hwy. 8 )

We are in Denali this Aug. 28 and feel like traveling on Denali Hwy. If anyone has traveled recently, I would like to hear about their experience and pro & con of this venture.

First thing is to get the book, Milepost. Yes its a bunch of ads but it has great information about every mile of roads in Alaska. And if you are going to Denali National Park, you may want to get a copy of Discovering Denali

If you get a chance, stop and stay at the Talkeetna Roadhouse in Talkeetna Alaska. One of the few remaining roadhouses left in Alaska. If you can't spend the night there be sure to have a true Alaska breakfast there. Link to Alaska Roadhouses:

Check with your car rental company. As far as I know, none of the national chains will allow their cars on the Denali. (Or, to be more specific, they'll say that you will have to pay for all damage, towing charges, etc., whether or not you took supplemental insurance with your rental.)

If it's your own car, or one from a rental agency that allows it (some Alaska-based agencies do) then enjoy! In late August you'll undoubtedly have some spectacular autumn color in the tundra as you drive the Denali. It's a scenic road, but way slow due to road conditions on the gravel bits.

Gardyloo,Are there any other cons other than being slow. Would I get road service in needed, even though expensive ?
