Hello

I will be travelling to Colorado in May 2017 with a friend. we do not have a car and we absolutely rely on public transport. We will be there for 4 days and would like to cover the best places possible.

Anybody who has been there and done that or has any information about how we can make it a successful trip in the cheapest possible way please let me know.

Any suggestions are welcome.

You need to be much more specific. Colorado is a big state but I assume you may mean Denver. You would be find on Denver without a car sinne a very good and extensive light rail and bus system. You could get just about everywhere on public transit in metro Denver. For the rest of the state you will need a car.

You could take the Train, Amtrac, to Glenwood Springs and a bus to Aspen but it would be slow and inconvenient. But you need a car for the mountains.

It is true that the Amtrak California Zephyr is often late into Denver. The Colorado Department of Transportation recently started the Bustang service https://www.codot.gov/travel/bustang
The bus leaves the Denver station at 8:05AM and arrives in Glenwood Springs at about the time that the CZ is supposed to arrive.
There is a good bus service that goes from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and Maroon Bells.

Without a car, outside the Boulder/Denver greater metro area, you can't do much at all, let alone in four days.

Why no car?

Denver is a fine city, the light rail and the buses go to many places that a visitor like you might want to check out, but is that what you want to do?

Tell us why you're coming to Colorado, what you wish to see that makes you come here, and we'll give you a better idea of what may be possible.

OK then, how about answering the questions so that we may be of help?

You can do it without a car. From the airport, take a bus or the train downtown. Stay a night there, or get on a train to the mountains. (True, Amtrak can run late, though.)

I suggest you go to Fraser, CO. You can catch a local shuttle from the train station, or ask your hotel for transportation.

Stay at Vasquez Inn or Trailhead Inn, where you will have free daily shuttle to sister property, Devil's Thumb Ranch, to enjoy everything that facility offers: hiking, horses, spa, dining, etc.

(If you can afford it, stay at the Ranch itself, because it's really special. Their bunkhouse is relatively inexpensive.)

Or, take Amtrak to Glenwood Springs. Enjoy that area, by bus to Aspen, as suggested above.
