Traveling to Yellowstone

My husband, 2 kids and I are heading up to Yellowstone from DesMoines Ia. We have been thru the Bad Lands and Black Hills of South Dakota a couple times and was wondering if we should take another route up there that would be interesting. Any ideas?

You might consider driving though North Dakota. I haven't driven all of Hwy 94 but on the western side of N. Dakota is Roosevelt National Park and in Montana just before Billings is Pompay's Pillar National Monument. Unfortunately, the Beartooth Highways is closed this year because of road damaged done by mud slides or that would be the route to take into Yellowstone.

You say you have been to Badlands and Black Hills...have you been to Devils Tower National Monument in WY? That might make it worth it to come back though Rapid City. That and the mountain passes between Cody and Sheridan, WY are scenic too.

it's a little out of your way , well more than just a little, but have you considered taking 80 to 76 to 34 and going to rocky mountain national park in colorado, then head up?

you would need 2 extra days for this tho, in order to see the park and make up the travel time distance which but it would be different,

justme2,

I also thought about Rocky Mountain National Park and it's not that far out of the way. I just didn't know how much time Adventuremom had for this trip.

DesMoines to Old Faithful, Yellowstone via Rapid City is about 1135 miles.

DesMoines to Old Faithful, Yellowstone via Roosevelt is 1310 miles.

DesMoines to Old Faithful, Yellowstone via Denver is 1240 miles.

Thanks for all the help and options. There are so many and they all sound great. We've been thru the Rocky's last year and the Black HIlls the year before(we made it to Devil's tower, but wished we had time to go up to yellowstone), but we've never been thru North Dakota. We have plenty of time, a month for this vacation and I was wondering if we should camp at Yellowstone and drive to Glacier and Tetons, or do you think it would be better to camp at each one? Are the Hot Springs in Thermopolis worth seeing? If so would it be worth it to go clear up to Cody before entering Yellowstone?

Oh Wow! I'm sorry I guess I thought Glacier Nat. Park was closer to Yellowstone. We have a month for our vacation do you think it would be better to do Glacier another trip? Coming from Iowa what order would you visit these parks? We'd like to see the Tetons, Yellowstone, and maybe Glacier, but that might be too much traveling in the motorhome with the kids. We would like to take our time and enjoy and relax as we go.
