Oh you have to play the third and report back to me!

Golf digest just ranked two of Bandon Dunes Courses in the Top 100 Public Golf Courses in the United States. I think they were both ranked in the top five or top ten.

GoTravel...my DH played two of Bandon's courses, Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes, last summer. Golf at Bandon (4 golfing buddies) was their sole destination! (DH from FL and the other 3 from Dallas.) They flew into Portland and took off immediately for the (I think he said 4 hour) drive to Bandon. Played 36 holes the 1st day and 18 the next. They are links style courses and even in my non-golfing eyes, spectacularly beautiful. The first day the wind was blowing something like 40 MPH LOL, but he played well--2nd day was "one of those days", but it was a thrill for them all. If he went back, I'd have to go along too next time...like he doesn't get to go to Scotland without me either.

Scarlett, good luck with househunting! We're heading out next weekend to Victoria to do exactly the same thing. I envy you having done this before; this is brand new for me since I've never, ever lived anywhere else. Have a fantastic and successful trip!

Still have room on the list, Scarlett? My wife and I just finished a great day of wine tasting with dinner in the Pearl at what's become a favorite place for a light meal: Paragon. Been there 3-4 times in the last couple months, but haven't yet gotten beyond the oysters and the caesar with calamari. Really nice food.

And I suspect you'd also want to know about St. Honore Boulangerie & Patisserie on NW 23rd and Thurmond. It's as close as we get to Paul's in Portland.

I'm game GT!!

I had a dream last night that we were taking a spur of the moment trip but to Seattle. I was upset 'cause I wouldn't have time to come on here and find out where we should eat and what we should see and we don't know Seattle at all. And in the dream we were staying at 5th Ave Suites...LOL...although I knew that was Portland and that there's a Hyatt in Seattle and why weren't we staying there free?? All my clothes had holes in them, even the new ones. I woke up this morning exhausted. LOL I don't know if you want to travel with me!!

Beachbum--Once again, we probably crossed paths yesterday! Our weekend plans changed when the guys could not summit Mt. Hood. So the kids stayed home, and all the adults went into Portland yesterday and had dinner (and way too many drinks) and stayed at the 5th Avenue Suites. We are moving quite slow today.

OO--Your dream sounds like how our weekend went! Wierd! Our friend only had climbing clothes and his suit (traveling before arriving here). So he had to borrow dh's clothes and shoes, lol!

Scarlett--Glad you are virus free now. You have mail

beachbum - Thank you for mentioning St. Honore!! I haven't been there since last year and kind of forgot about it (how is that possible?). What a great place. Yum!

OK, now about wine
..that lovely wine bar is gone now in the Pearl ( 750 ml?) so where do you suggest just stopping for an afternoon pick me up?
or an after dinner drink before staggering off to bed

Scarlett, glad you posted this. I'm just adding to my culinary list for the Portland sojourn in late July.

Beachbum, we settled on Pumpkin Ridge for the golfing. Judged Bandon was a bit too far for a jaunt from Portland, play, and get back in time for the shank of the day.

Scarlett, 750ml has been replaced by a martini bar, if you're into that sort of place. We've been once; probably won't give it a second. My favorite wine bar in town is Noble Rot, which also has great small plates. But it's on the other side of the river, so it would be a long "stagger". Vigne, in the Pearl is also supposed to be good, but I've not been. Aside from those, some restaurants, like Fratelli's, also have small wine bars where they'll do lighter menus.

Jim, too bad Bandon won't fit your schedule. But after the courses there Pumpkin would be my next on my list. Course owners/operators are fully expecting a major (probably the PGA) to be played there in the next 5-6 years. Hope you have a great time in Oregon. Let us know if you need any more planning help.

Vigne! I remember that place..thanks!
Jim, Portland has so many good places to eat! We were there for 10 days last Sept and it was a great meal every night..this year we will be househunting , so I want to do more casual and less serious eating.
I would like to add Papa Haydns to your list .. great desserts and really good lunch..on NW23rd Street..
I look forward to shopping on that street and having lunch there, in a couple of weeks
And I bet the weather will be sunny and dry

Next weekend, actually

Scarlett, will you be looking at lofts or something more traditional?

Does Portland have those fun Houseboats San Francisco and Seattle have?

Will you be wafting?

GoT, honey, I daydream every day about wafting through a Pearl Loft. I will look at them first, we will look at the other apts after. Crossing my fingers we will find something really perfect right away so we can spend the rest of the visit, exploring.
I think I can waft pretty well
Yes, they do have houseboats but I am not that much of a water lover .. unless it is in a deep tub full of bubbles

I have always thought it would be neat to live on a houseboat. A few years ago I visited the funky marina in San Lois Obispo where people build houseboats from just about anything (even a tug boat sitting dry on a barge).

I will be in Portland sometime next week to check it out as a potential re-location city Where is the marina(s) where you can buy or rent one to live on?
