Travel to the Grand Canyon

We wish to travel to the Grand Canyon. We will be flying in from the Southeast. I know we can fly into Phoenix or Tucson. Is there any closer or easier place for commercial flights? Thanks.

Lot's of people fly into either Las Vegas or Salt Lake City... Phoenix is probably best if your only plan is to visit the south rim of the GC... but there is so much else to see. Any other sightseeing plans?

We've used Las Vegas to fly in to several times for the south rim. Both airfare and car rentals were much less expensive and there are lots of other things to do from there. Sometimes we stop at Hoover Dam and spend the night along the way closeto I 40.

Most people fly into Las Vegas. Car rentals are also cheaper out of Las Vegas than Phoenix. Tucson makes no sense as it is farther than Phoenix from Grand Canyon.

Make sure you get accomodation reservations made before you arrive. The place fills up in the summer.

If you can find a decent rate on a one way car rental, you can fly into Las Vegas and out of Phoenix---or vice-versa. Car rentals are more expensive at the Phoenix airport.

Another option is to fly into Flagstaff, which is approx 90 minutes south of the GC. The only carrier is US Airways but if you fly them from your point of origin, the extra cost is minimal for the flight from Phoenix (PHX) to Flagstaff (FLG). If you fly into PHX, your drive to the GC will be about 4+ hours. The plane to FLG is a 37-seater, in case that makes a difference.

Thank you to all who replied. We are booked in Sedona for a week. I've heard how wonderful Sedona is, so am trying to decide if maybe we should plan to go to the Grand Canyon, another time.

No, go to the Grand Canyon this time.
Book a room in one of the rim lodges.

A week in Sedona might be a bit much
unless your idea of a good time is
hanging out in a spa.

Go to the Grand Canyon. You could do a day trip from Sedona or an overnight. We stayed in a timeshare, but went ahead and paid for a night at the South Rim. So worth it!!

Here is a link to our trip report. It is old, but may help you plan.

Good luck,

Thank you to all. I have discovered that Sedona isn't too far from Sho Low were my dear aunt lives. We will plan a trip over to see her, and thanks to MichelleY and Happytrailstoyou, may rethink our Grand Canyon trip.
