Travel book on ALASKA???

If I were to get just one travel book to guide me through my cruise and self-driven land tour, which is the VERY best!!! Opinions please!!

I love DK Eyewitness Travel books. They usually have a full size version and a Top 10 version. Although I think for Alaska they only have the full size--which I have and think it's great: lots of photos, explanations, maps, etc. You can search for them at:

Barnes and Nobel, Borders, and other book stores all have large travel sections. I'd also suggest flipping through a few different guides to determine which meets your needs the most.

Good luck

If you're driving through Alaska, or any part of the "northwest," the latest edition of _The Milepost_ is necessary and sufficient as a travel guide. No other comes remotely close for info you need while driving. When I drove, I had five guide books, but always ended up using that one.

I agree with the above post--the Milepost is the best.

ditto on the Milepost. We used it for our driving holiday through Alaska and found it absolutely invaluable. I wish there was one for other states. We are doing a driving holiday in September in the States and having a book like the Milepost would have been just perfect.

I agree with pijeta, spend an afternoon flipping through the selection at Barnes & Noble to find a favorite.

I also love my Alaska for Dummies book.

If you can really only have one, The Milepost is it. I'd really prefer at least 2. One to browse through to get a quick feel for what sights are really important to me, and then The Milepost to take along to find them on my way.

Adding to my earlier response, I cross reference my Fodors and Alaska for Dummies.

I have my MilePost preordered (FREE shipping on the website) and plan to carry that along with me on the trip too.

Head to your library and take out Alaska travel books. I frequently take them with me on trips- just a week ago I took back the library copy of Fodor's Hawaii 2007.

Even older editions offer plenty, just verify prices directly online. I hardly ever buy books. I do have a 2004 Milepost that I still use.

For those purchasing the MILEPOST. the new edition comes out in March. Don't purchase a 2006 edition unless significantly discounted. The Anchorage Walmarts also have copys discounted, about $20.

I went wild when I started planning our trip and now have Fodors, Frommers AAA's Tour book and Mileposts. If I mess up with all this info shame on me. Prefer Fodors to Frommers but pretty much the same. Good luck
