Travel advice

We will be leaving Sarasota, Florida at end of April by car and wish to find the least congested route to new Hampshire.

Drive at night on back roads.

Otherwise, provide some useful guidance on what you really want, how long you will, or are willing to, take to get there (and back) and what you'd want to see in between.

I75 to Ocala - 40 to I95. Head north.

Take I-75 north to just north of Knoxville, TN, then get on I-81 north and stay on to Binghamton, NY; then head east on I-88 to Rotterdam/Schenectady, NY and then get on I-90 to Albany, NY; in Albany go north on I-787 to Troy, NY and get off at exit 9E onto Highway 7; take Highway 7 over the Hudson River and continue on Highway 7; eventually Highway 7 will take you into Vermont at which point Highway 7 will start being called 9 and will head into the town of Bennington in Bennington Highway 7 will turn off of 9 but don’t take that stay straight on 9; 9 will continue on across Vermont to the town of Brattleboro and then will cross over the Connecticut River into New Hampshire. This route will avoid the congestion of DC, Philadelphia and New York City and the myriad of tolls on the New York Thruway and the New Jersey Turnpike.

Advice from Isessions looks pretty good and is a route we have probably taken from the south.

An alternative would be to follow googlemaps first suggested route from Knoxville which gives directions to Hartford CT. This would be a congested area at certain times of the day. Heading north, instead of taking the Mass turnpike I90, head for I91 which takes you thru western MA to Brattleboro VT then head for Keene NH. Depending on where in NH you are headed, from Keene take 101 toward Nashua or head to Concord NH via rt 9 to 202 to I89.

The route from Bennington to Brattleboro is pretty but not fun to drive if you are extremely tired when you go over Hogback Mountain due to curves. I don't have any problem in Hartford in the middle of the day.

MollyinFL suggested the most direct but MOST congested route.

The other answers depend a lot on WHERE you are going in NH. I love the southwestern part of NH! But I wouldn't go either of those ways if I were going to Portsmouth in the SE or Bethlehem in the NW.

At first, I thought Big Russ was being snarky, but there is indeed a lot of merit in back roads if you aren't in a hurry. Night? No. The repopulation of the East Coast by critters -- deer, bear, coyotes, foxes, possums, and raccoons -- makes twilight and night driving dangerous in a lot of beautiful places. There are now more deer in he East than there were before the European Invasion.
