Transportation to Bronx Zoo
As a family we are visiting the Bronx Zoo Holiday lights in mid- Dec. Is the walk safe from the subway at Pelham? Or would you recommend the Express bus from what location in midtown Manhattan?

It's a looong walk from the Pelham subway to the zoo.
Here's another idea. You could take Metro North to the Botanical Gardens stop and then walk to the Zoo from there. It would be shorter. Maybe someone else could confirm that for me.

It is a hefty walk from the Metro North station and the subway to the Zoo. Not only is it a bit of a walk it is a walk that you are likely not to see other pedestrians. The best way is the bus that goes directly o the zoo. Go to http://www.bronxzoo.com/bz-directions_to_the_zoo for detailed info on the BX11 bus to the zoo.
