I haven't done a Transit Advisory in quite a while so here goes.

On August 20, 2023, the fares on NYC Subway, Bus and Commuter Rail (MetroNorth, LIRR) will be increasing.

The Subway and local Bus fare will go from $2.75 to $2.90 (when using a MetroCard or coins on a bus). A Single Fare ticket will increase from $3.00 to $3.25 (Single fare tickets are only available from large vending machines in Subway stations)

The Unlimited MetroCards will increase: (unlimited cards can only be used by a single person, it cannot be shared)

7 Day from $33.00 to $34.00 (You will have to use it 12 times within the 7 days to start saving money 12 x $2.90 = $34.80)
30 Day from $127.00 to $132.00 (You will have to use it 46 times within the 30 days to start saving money 46 x $2.90 = $133.40)

Note that the above also applies to the OMNY program as well. except that OMNY does not yet have the Unlimited options. https://omny.info/

Reminders on purchasing a MetroCard at at subway station (note - subway station booths no longer do any transactions but will provide travel information)
- MetroCard Vending Machines (MVM) can only do one transaction at a time.
- A regular MetroCard can handle up to 4 people
- if using a credit or debit card you are allowed only 2 transactions per day (system-wide) using that credit or debit card so it is best you work out to see if purchasing a regular MetroCard will work better than if you were considering a Single Fare ticket(s).
- if paying in cash at a MVM the maximum amount of change it will return is $9.00 (in dollar coins). If your intended purchase would result in more than that the machine will suggest a higher value MetroCard.

On the MetroNorth and Long Island Railroads the fare (which is distance based) will increase by 4.5%.

Most tourists will not be using OMNY or MetroCard or cash but using a contactless credit card. That used to be $2,75, so I assume it’s going to $2.90.

There are still plenty of tourists who will use the MetroCard. Not everyone wants the "exposure" of their credit/debit card information directly to the system.

The use of contactless credit (or debit) card is part of the OMNY program. You are correct the fare regardless of what is used will be $2.90 as of August 20.
