Ok hi guys i will be traveling to New York from Melbourne on the 8th of September, we are flying Premium Economy on V Australia To L.A. but then we fly Virgin America to New York. We landing at Tom Bradley International Airport and must transfer to Terminal 3, we arrive on VA11 at 18:55 and depart on VX418 at 21:30 first is their enough TIME? and is it walking distance from the two terminals?

And on the way back....

We fly Delta from New York to L.A. and arrive at 18:36 in Terminal 5 and must then transfer to terminal 3 for VA1 at 22:10 to Sydney please let me know if I have enough time or maybe its better to just go with Qantas as the whole journey would be with them and no terminal change...

You should have enough time as long as your incoming flights aren;t too late. Iw ould check their on-time recrod to see what it looksl like. (Some flights are notorious for routinely being an hour or more late.)

In September weather shouldn't be an issue - but traffic definitely could be.

There might be a problem with time on your inbound transfer because you have to go through customs at the Tom Bradley terminal, don't you? Whenever I have met someone there, it seems like forever before they come out into the waiting area. The walk to terminal 3 is only about 10 minutes, but you have to be there well before departure time. What are they telling you? 2 hours?

Coming back, it seems like you're OK. You can cut through the parking structure from terminal 5 to 3 to save a few steps.

ok it looks like they have a good on-time performance, but the thing is when we get out of tom Bradley terminal how to we to the departure level?

The consensus around this household is that you will exit the Bradley Terminal at the arrival level for all the other terminals. At LAX, for all the terminals, the upper level is for departures and the lower level is for arrivals. The Bradley terminal is confusing to me in this regard because after you go through customs, you walk up a long ramp to get to the waiting area where all the people greet their arriving relatives, friends, etc. So you might think that would be the upper level, but, according to my wife and daughter, apparently not.

But it really doesn't matter. After you exit the Bradley terminal, just go left and follow the sidewalk to terminal 3. There are signs there directing you to the departure level. There are escalators, but if you need an elevator (lift?) I'm sure there is one somewhere inside the terminal. Just ask a friendly Angeleno.
