Well, definitely check Tripadvisor first - lots of reviews, etc...
Torrey appears to only have a handful of places to choose from, tho.

The Best Western there is ranked #2, so that's probably your best bet.

Much more to choose from in Boulder, and more likely that someone here has a recommendation, so I'll pass...

We stayed at the Best Western and really liked it for convenience to the park plus the pool and hot tub. We got a cheap rate on Expedia and they wouldn't let us stay in the building nearest the view but the outdoor hot tub was good and had a great view. Don't eat there though.. there are better options. For breakfast hit the bagel shop at the gas station in Torrey (at junction with rt12) you'll get homemade bagels and smoothies.
Boulder Mountain Lodge is a great place to stay.

Torrey: Austin's...not fancy but very clean, perhaps the cleanest place I've ever stayed. Rooms or cabins but it books up fast. They have a store, laundromat, pool, hot tub spa, deli/mexican food takeout and an original settlers log cabin where Zane Gray used to stay on the grounds as well.
Boulder: I think you have only two choices Boulder Mountain Lodge which is very nice but $$$. Then there's Pole's Place which is a small motel and was nice but plain. When we stayed there in '03 the fan in the AC unit was very noisy so I didn't sleep well.
Boulder Mountain Lodge has been our choice 2 of the 3 times we've spent the night in Boulder. BML also has a wonderful and large hot tub spa and outdoor showers for rinsing that seems little used (except for us of course). That the Hell's Backbone Grill is on the BML grounds is a huge + in my book as well. Super food and super folks as well.

thepeters, I think you got your towns mixed up. Many choices in Torrey, few in Boulder. I recommend Wonderland Inn, reasonably priced, large clean rooms, pool and hot tub, full service restaurant, free internet in the lobby, free coffee to guest.

Funny,
Confused between thepeters and peterboy!!!
Thanks.
Booked Boulder Mountain Lodge in Boulder.
Tempted to go with Best Western in Torrey.
Would like to be close to Route 24 & 12 junction or a bit to the east.
How far is Austins from the junction?

Austin's is about quarter mile or so west of the junction. Wonderland is right at the junction on top of a hill, and Best Western is east of the junction and closest to Capitol Reef about a mile away. I don't think you can wrong with any of these three.

We wanted to extend our stay at Austin's for another night but couldn't since it was all booked up. We called around and ended up at the Best Western.
It was fine in a large kind of way vs. little Austin's but we enjoyed the hot tub and swimming pool.
Probably the best feature was being able to walk across the road to the Rimrock Restaurant. It had been recommended by the woman at the Mormon homestead museum at the National Park. The advice was good and we thought The Rimrock was as good as Cafe Diablo. Nice to have an option or two.

We stayed at the Torrey Best Western (July'06) and loved watching the sunrise overlooking Capitol Reef NP from our private balcony. As others said, the restaurant left much to be desired but the little pizza place across the street was yummy and with 360 views.
Last summer (july 07) we stayed at Austins (for a change/new memory). While somewhate rustic, it had full satellite tv; dh was thrilled to catch a game late that night
Roosters runnning amuk (sp?) was interesting too in a bizarre way.
And while it was spotless, we still preferred the BW.
Another previous year ('03 i think) we stayed at the wonderland inn. A little outdated compared to the BW, and their pool is enclosed by a plastic type dome. The SCORPION we saw next to the pool is what we most remember, which might be why we didn't stay there again. And yes, i totally get they can be anywhere
RE restaurants: The Capitol Reef Inn was closed in july 07 (no reason why posted on the door) but is great for breakfast. The wonderland inn restaurant was EXTREMELY understaffed and slow last summer.
Also check out The Burr Trail Cafe & Trading Post. Had dinner there in july, arriving to find no one there before during or after us. Regardless, the food was very good and fresh - dh had and loved something mexican - the salads were interesting and enormous and of note, were the MOCHA CREAM CUPCAKES - yummmm! Owner/ manager says there's always something being baked, reason enough to go back! Plus, good taste in music - they had beatles, journey and bon jovi on random play
