top of the rock has more room to explore, less crowded, better views on the whole, IMO

The experience at Top of the Rock is much nicer, faster and more pleasant. You get to see the ESB from TOTR. The only thing is, TOTR has a great view of Central Park but if you go at night when it's dark, the park appears to be just a big dark hole (since it's not lit). I generally suggest people visit TOTR during daylight or dusk and ESB at night. The views and experiences are different.

Top of the Rock.

We went on a Thursday night at dusk, and stayed through sunset until it was dark and the city was lit up. It was beautiful. The fact that you get a timed entry and don't have to wait in hour+ long lines (like at the Empire St. Building) would decide for me. Also, I got great pictures of the Empire State Building.

very nice pictures!

I booked us for Top of the Rock at night, a half hr after Drowsy Chaperone gets out. I thought we'd be rushed to do it at dusk w/the plays each evening (and we eat dinner before the theater, don't like to eat late at night). Will include it in my trip report.
