My favorites are:

San Francisco - Great neighborhoods, views, restaurants,
architecture

New York - Theater, restaurants,
museums

San Diego - Beach culture, varied topography (canyons, valleys, mountains, coastline)

Boston - Historic, great architecture, neighborhoods

Seattle - Beautiful Setting, water everywhere, trees, islands

Here's THE short list. Everybody else doesn't know what they're talking about.
1-New York City-my hometown and still #1
2-San Diego-fun in the sun
3-Washington, DC-best "area" to live
4-Boston-the British are coming
5-San Fran-although I hear the bums are taking over

1. NYC (21 votes)
2. San Fran (18 votes)
3-5. Boston, Chicago Washington DC (tied with 11 votes each)

also ...

7. New Orleans (with a surprising 6 votes)
