Top 5 U.S. cities?
 

Just a quick querie. What are your favourite 5 U.S. cities?

NY, LA, San Francisco, in order, probably.<BR><BR>Toss-up between Chicago and Phoenix, because I don't know Phoenix well enough, having only been there for a day and a half, working.<BR><BR>Naples, Florida, is at the bottom or the top five, alhough on this list it is also in sixth place. Also just off the list is Boston.<BR><BR>Never been to San Diego; maybe it would come in fifth or sixth if I knew it.<BR><BR>BAK

Hey Brian, pretty close to mine.<BR>NYC, LA, SanFran., Chicago, Boston in that order.<BR>Naples isn't on my list cause I live there, but amazed how close our lists are.<BR>Most people never believe I put LA above SanFrancisco, but after spending lots and lots of time in both, LA just keeps impressing me more and SF less.

Cities that will be brought up but should be immediately disqualified. Phoenix, Atlanta, anyplace in Florida, anyplace in Texas, Los Angeles. Phoenix and Chicago a toss up? If I lived in Chicago, them would be fightin' words.<BR>

As I age I find my opinion has varied on this one. There are quite a number I haven't been to, so this list is naturally incomplete.<BR><BR>Here's my list for right now... Philadelphia, NYC, Boston, Baltimore, Washington...in that order. <BR><BR>Yeah I know...they're all in the northeast. I think it's a preference on my part for more compact cities with historic architecture and good public transit. I still have never been to Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland to name a few...so my favorites may change.

San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, New York City and San Diego. Are you just talking about large cities? I love both Key West and Santa Barbara and would fit them both in if you include smaller cities.

Charleston(I know it's a town but it's still a favourite), New York, Chicago, Washington D.C. and Miami.

To Deep Throat, <BR>No I am not a journalist. I am travelling from Australia to the U.S. this year and wanted to know from an American's point of view what are the best cities to see. Sure, I can read up on them, but I wanted to get advice from people who have actually seen alot of America. I only have 4 weeks so I want to get the most out of my holiday!

Yikes, Anne, you would have gotten more useful responses if you had explained your reason! For a visitor like you, most of us would select cities that represent different regions of the country, or types of communities.<BR><BR>Are you especially interested in history, art, show business (New York and Los Angeles), wonderful scenery (northwest and southwest), outdoor activities, archaeology, fishing, what? We've got everything! What time of year will you be here? Do you plan to visit areas around the cities, too?

Not that they're the top 5, but for a visit you might try:<BR><BR>Boston (U.S. History then)<BR>Washington DC (U.S. History now)<BR>New York (hey, it's New York)<BR>Los Angeles (might as well...)<BR>San Francisco (great city)<BR><BR>Honorable mention: Chicago, Miami, New Orleans, San Diego.<BR><BR>Don't waste your time: Atlanta, Orlando

Don't get the whole Baltimore thing either. A few nice blocks and then a giant ghetto.<BR><BR>Sleepers Pittsburg, Milwaukee, Providence, Portland, Maine.

Hi<BR><BR>I put Baltimore in the top 5...the question was "what are my favorite 5 U.S. cities" and the city makes the top five. <BR><BR> "A few nice blocks and then a ghetto"? That kind of statement is from somebody who doesn't know the city in the least. Federal Hill, Fell's Point, Mount Vernon, Mount Washington, Canton, Hampden...all<BR>dynamic, interesting neighborhoods with plenty of history, charm and unique stores. I'm always discovering something new to like about the city, even though I've been here 2 years now.<BR><BR>I love the city for its working-class roots, rich history and the ambience of its markets: Lexington Market, Cross St. Market, Northeast Market, Broadway Market. And a big plus, Baltimore's a LOT less expensive than a lot of "favorites" on this list and very centrally-located for quick getaways. You can think the city is a hellhole if you like but I find you myopic and unapologetically put Baltimore in the top 5. <BR><BR>Cheers DAN
