TKTS - Little known fact

The TKTS booth gets very long lines starting at 1:00pm but still seems to have a good selection and no line at 5pm. In fact, one day they didn't have "Chicago" at three, but did have it at 6pm--3rd row center mezz

The above was snipped from a note posted on this board.

Note the comment about length of lines. Also note the comment about Chicago tickets.
It is a fact that theater box offices will submit tickets to TKTS an hour or so prior to curtain even though the show was not listed earlier in the day..They do this when they know the tickets will not sell. Better to get half price than having the seat remain empty. Don’t know how often this happens but it does happen.. Don't expect, however, to find tickets for Producers or any other show that is selling out.

Also the line at the World Trade Center tends to be shorter and sells matinee tickets the day before.

rqf is quite right about the chance of lucking in later in the day for tickets at TKTS. Unfortunately, there is no rule of thumb on what shows might be there later in the day that weren't there earlier. Obviously, you're taking a chance if you want until the last minute. You could get lucky or you could get shut out!
Some shows that are still doing well, but not selling out, are reluctant to offer any tickets at TKTS for fear (rightly or wrongly) that the word will get around and people will not go to the box office and spend full price, but rather will wait around until close to show time. It has happened with some shows.

Disney Productions (Lion King, Aida and Beauty and the Beast), I have been told, have a policy of not offering tickets to TKTS for the reason stated above. I have noticed, however, that tickets for Beauty and the Beast have been available at TKTS recently. I wonder if they have changed their policy.

I have seen Beauty and the Beast tix at TKTS on many occasions during the past 6-8 months. It's Disney's longest running show on Broadway and perhaps they've wise to the fact that TKTS will help keep the seats full - I suspect that many B&B tix are sold in advance to groups who come in on charters, thus the TKTS policy may not hurt sales. Surprisingly, I have never seen Phantom on the board. I always buy my TKTS seats late, generally between 6 and 7PM and have had great success - this week in particular the selection has been tremendous.
