try Mississippi, you'll hate it...unless of course, you are a lawyer. This state is becoming a haven for lawyers who seek LARGE damage awards given by ignorant juries against big companies. Even neighboring ALA lawyers, (where nonsense litigation has been restricted in recent years) have applied with the MS BAR, so they can sue here.
Of course, ALA's attorney general led the way in tort reform. Guess who our attorney General is, Mike Moore! The FIRST to file a MAJOR lawsuit against the tobacco industy.
The town I live in has lost 7 business's (major employers/factories) in two years). None of which are staying in state. Little wonder.

I've had the displeasure of living in Detroit,MI, Grand Forks, ND, Toledo, OH, St.Paul, MN and Beaumont, TX and the WINNER IS.........Beaumont, TX by a long shot. You have pollution, racism, poverty, guns, cancer, and the mentality that Texas is the best place on earth.

Gary, Indiana- Dangerous and smells.
Detroit-Need I elaborate
Baltimore-Glad I made it out alive
New Orleans-Dangerous and Humid
East St. Louis, Illinois-Makes St.louis Missouri look like Rome.
Anywhere on the Texas/Mexico border.
West Virginia-Deliverance

Ilove Arizona and would glady leave England to go there tomorrow, but 2 of the worst places I have ever been to are in this otherwise beautiful state.Page(pylon heaven & expensive )and worse than that Nogales(it was so bad that it changed my mind about going over the border to Nogales Mexico).Gallup New Mexico also merits an honourable mention. Not that England is any better-Stoke On Trent could give any of the above a run for their money, and with worse weather.

I would have to say that after many years of traveling, the worst city I have ever visited is Pittsburgh, PA. I spent 2 days in the city and hated every minute of it. I would also have to vote for the whole state of Mississippi...miserable!
For those who bashed Chicago, I would have to say that it is one of my favorite places! In the words of Jerry Springer,"Chicago is the most liveable big city in the U.S." Great restaurants, great shopping, culteral diversity, and midwesterners are known for being so nice.
And for those who said East St. Louis, although I would definately agree, I would almost hardly say that this counts as a "city" anymore. Its less than 2 miles from St. Louis, and for its size, there is only about 40,000 residents. Half of the town is desolate and condemned anyways so no one goes there, expect to pass by its 2 or 3 exits on the interstates heading to/from St. Louis. Just my humble opinion!
Having lived in St. Louis (the Illinois side) all of my life, I will be the first to admit that there isn't much to do in this town. However, I must give it credit for being a nice town to live in overall.
Fun poll! This is my first time posting and it was fun reading everyone's opinions!

Hartford, CT
It's just depressing. The Insurance City. No major sports, spotty attempts at culture and community. CT is a beautiful state, but the cities are consistently dreary and proved to be 'boom'-proof during the economy's upswing. As we go through our current times, Hartford will no doubt prove it still isn't 'recession'-proof. When the 'Mark Twain' house is your major attraction, you know your city's a yawner.

I would have to say Miami Fl. it should not even be considered part of the U.S. English is a second language there. No I am not an AMS co-conspiritor. AMS, I do live in Florida and I happen to like it (except Miami), and you are a complete and total idiot!!! Just because I happen to like Florida does not make me a Disneyite or a Real estate broker. Just shut up please no one cares about your idiotic rantings anymore.

WOW!!! I've got to agree with you Minnesota sucks. I spent 9 miserable years there and not by choice (Minneapolis, Edina, Excelsior, and St Paul) I found the people to be totally brain dead and closed minded.
You forgot to say, Land of the Small Mind - LOL. I found several other transplants that felt exactly as I did and were also never accepted into their closed society.
It is an especially miserable place to live if you are of "ethnic" appearance or have an accent. By the way, that was just 3 years ago.
I thank god everyday that I'm back in CA ~~ Life is Beautiful.

I love this, it's right up my alley:
Las Vegas can be blown up. It's worthless. It's right up there with salesmen--gross.
Denver is young, needs to grow up a bit, but may always lack a historical feel...LowDo, that is.
Anywhere in IL south of Chicago. And of course Gary, IN, Gary, IN, Gary, Indiana ('Music Man' reference)
Harry Chapin said: "I spent 2 weeks in Watertown one afternoon". Watertown, is that upstate NY?

Gary Indiana may be the ugliest city AND it smells of chemicals and oil. As for the Pittsburgh reference, I happen to think it's a great city, and no I don't live there. I actually live about 60 miles nw of Gary and I'm surprised I can't smell it.
