The Whaler Hotel in Maui

Looking for information on The Whaler Hotel in Maui. If anyone has ever stayed or visited this hotel I would like to hear from you. Considering staying at The Whaler or the Embassy Suites. Any comments welcomed.

I've never stayed at the Whaler before but we have friends from Japan with 2 kids who travel to Maui twice a year to relax before coming to Oahu to shop and visit with friends. If you are a couple with young kids you might want to try it out.

Thanks for the reply. No kids, this is for the honeymoon.

Stayed at the Whaler some years back - very good location, next to The Whaler's Village (lots of eating places, shops, etc.) The condos are all individually owned so they vary in furnishings. We had a 1 bedroom, 2 bath ocean front unit which was very very nice, but again, they vary in decor. The bldgs. are old (built in '70's maybe or late 60's) and the pool is small but the location is great. Stay away from the Embassy Suites - we've walked around there several times and it's always been overrun with kids (not ideal for a honeymoon!!) They also converted it to time-share and you will be bombarded with people trying to sell you a room. I know you can't avoid kids, but you can minimize them (event he most expensive hotels seem to have their fair share of people with kids)! We enjoy the Mahana as all the condo's there are ocean front. We've stayed there 4 times and again, all units are individually owned but if you ask at check in for a recently remodeled on you may just get it (we always have). Parking is convenient and the condos come with a/c, daily maid, full kitchens, washer/dryer, lanai, and of course, ocean views from all rooms. Check out their website. The pool is small but the beach just to the south of the property is lovely! When we have been there it's never been overrun with kids.

Thanks Lori for the information. I was unaware that the units were individually owned. That's good to know. Thanks for the advice about asking for a remodled room also, would never have thought about that. Thanks for responding.

My husband and I haven't stayed at the Whaler. But have stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. It was very nice and affordable. A nice sized pool, two restaurants- one with very good affordable buffets, the other a nice sit down. The beach is very nice out in front and close enough to walk to Black Rock to snorkle.

I don't remeber a lot of children. There are also other restaraunts and bars close enough to walk to. We really liked the Bare Foot Bar.

The rooms were excellent, clean and had a lani.

We had a very good time and plan on going back soon!

Hi!
I've stayed at the Whaler, the Sheraton, the Kaanapali Alii, the Hyatt,
all on Maui, and I'm not a travel agent.
All the properties in that resort are very nice, and you should be happy at any one of them. However, if you prefer a condo (and the whaler is a condo) well, I prefer the Alii over the Whaler,
but the Whaler is still a very nice property. Several of my friends like to stay at the Whaler. They Hyatt is perfect for honeymooners. If you have any more questions e-mail me directly and I'll be happy to fill you in on any details about the Whaler, or Hyatt, et
cet. The Marriott is newly remodeled too! And they seemd to have some reasonalbe rates. Embassy Suites is in the unaccessible part of town. It's more convenient for most people to stay on Kaanapali Beach, as opposed to just north of there, which is where the Embassy is at. However, I have friends who stayed at the Embassy and they loved it (2 years ago).

Hi again BB - not knowing your budget it's hard to fully recommend someplace, but I believe the Kaanapoli Ali (condo) is quite expensive. Aston Properties (they manage The Mahana that I like so much) have several places on Maui. The Kaanapoli Shores is a very large place and the condos there also vary in furnishings (we stayed there one time), the Kaanapoli Villas are on the best beach but the condos are set back from the beach a ways (except for some that are ocean front) - they have a large grassy/garden area and pool, but their beach is the best of them all. I think in the long run it's what is important to you - as I said we prefer The Mahana because all the condos face the ocean and the views are spectacular, but there are other places that might fit the bill too. I'd stay away from Kihei, it's just not as nice (altho condos are cheaper there). Wailea is expensive but it is not as green/lush as Kaanapoli, Kahana, etc. The Whaler, and the others I have mentioned are all just a couple of miles (between 5 & 7) north of Lahaina and we've always found it good to be close to town and the stores.
The Kahana, Napili Beach area also has lots of condos. Happy Planning and enjoy the trip. Try and make plans for the all day ride to Hana while on Maui - it's a lovely experience and the scenery is spectacular, we've done it about 8 or 9 times and never tire of the beauty of the ride (Hana itself is just a small town, not much there).

I dont care for the whaler much especially for a honeymoon and I wont confuse you with another recommendation.
Take a look at the Aerial Photos of most all hotels on maui from Maui Revealed website, then you can ask about the hotel that looks best to you.

Just back from Maui - stayed at the Sheraton, which is close to the Whaler. The Whaler pool area is very small and crowded looking and the beach is unkempt looking - didn't see the units, but the whole place looked run down to me. The Sheraton is very nice and not as expensive as some of the other places. If you are a Starwood member, they give you a discount. The Marriott looked very nice too. A friend stayed at Kanapaali Beach Hotel and didn't like it. Good luck!
