1. St. Martin in the Caribbean. What a dump. (It's been years, so maybe it's been cleaned up--??) There are sulphur ponds near the town that smell to high heavens. And the 'town' is a collection of tourist trap shops on the poorest street with starving dogs begging everywhere.

Our rental car had recently been in a wreck and looked like it had rolled! This from one of the top three rental agencies. It was the only car they had with seat belts, not to mention they'd promised to have car seats in it for our kids. No car seats, just blank stares. And the bad drivers on the windy, narrow roads were not to be believed!

That was one place we were glad to stay put on our all-inclusive resort, which we have never done anywhere else.

Even the snorkeling was dismal, as they allowed spear fishing to happen right in the same waters. Talk about not feeling safe, nevermind not seeing any fish!

One day, we took the ferry to Anguilla and thought it was beautiful. Small enough to rent a cab for the day to take us around. Very few hotels, gorgeous powdery sand beaches. Someday we'd return there.

A cruise on the Norweigen Cruise Lines several years ago. What a dump, LOL. Don't remember the name of the ship.

It feels kind of unpatriotic -- but I have to add Maui, too.

The Hilton on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our room was shabby and the "wally world" atmosphere got on our nerves. We moved to another resort close-by after a couple of days.

I need to clarify my previous email. The Kohala Coast area on the Big Island was wonderful, but the Hilton was not.

This is a vague site, but we love Maui, and do it a very tight budget; why stay in a small room for $200, and eat all meals out, expensively, when you can get a lovely 2 bdrm condo (all the comforts of home)for $125? Rent a car, visit every beach, snorkel, hike to petroglyphs, pool/beach/waterfall swimming, boogie boarding?
Cancun is the worst. Unless you're a vomiting 19 yr old.

Will someone please explain why somebody like "kelbo" resurrects a 2-year-old thread? It's not as if someone was doing a search on some city, pulled up an old thread, and wanted an update. I never understand why people seem to have so little to do that they'll dredge up antique "survey" or general comment posts and start them up again.

I think some people like to "choose" the most popular places, like Hawaii to get a rise out of everyone. Come on people!
....I'll second Hilton Head, it's awesome for golfing, however, little else is there.
....My own pick is anywhere in the Outer Banks...still, have no idea why people rave about it. Spent countless weekends there as a child and I remember being bitten by misquitos and being bored!

The only place mentioned here that I have been is Outer Banks, and that was 16 days after hurricane Isabell. I go the the tourist spots before or after tourist season. Worst place I have visited was Atlantic City. Homeless and crack-heads laying around the streets one block from Trump Plaza, so much for up-scale. The other "what a waste of time was Hershey PA. What a dump. To ruin the Pennsylvania Dutch country with that is a disgrace, my kids even hated it.

I wonder what this threads # was when it was rejuvenated?

Sandals, Dunns River gets my vote. It the first and only time we stayed at an all inclusive. We now joke that we got sucked in by their advertizing whose budget seems to be much higher than the budget for the renovation of their hotels. Also we did not feel safe in Jamaica. The bus ride from the airport to the hotel was frightening. A police officer stopped the bus and walked up and dowm the aisles. We have traveled to many countries and have never felt as frightene as did in Jamaica.

I loved Maui and Myrtle Beach; go every year. I hated Vegas(behind all the beautiful hotels it is still seedy IMO) and a cruise I took on Norwegian Cruise Lines. It was the worst!

I totally agree with the comment about Jamaica, I would hate to be stuck there for a week. Unsafe for American tourists and it has been that way for many years.

For the life of me, I don't understand the appeal (to some) Sandals. Ugh, ugh, ugh. We went on a business trip and I cannot believe the prices they charge for what you get! We were in Nassau Sandals and the beach was tiny and pathetic. I cannot image paying mega bucks to travel to an island with pretty beaches and being stuck with Sandals. Horribly over-rated, and boring.

The "family friendly" resorts of Gatlingburg, TN, and the Wisconsin Dells are about as hokey as you can get.

Swalter, you have to give Palm Desert a chance in the dead of winter. That's when you appreciate it! Jump on a plane from your hometown, covered with snow, and arrive there. Aaahh.

I would like to add Seattle, especially the Space Needle. The rest of Washington state is great, however.
