Can anyone provide details on why they rated the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort as the most overrated?

Our trip to Sanibel two years ago was a big dissapointment as regards the shelling. We had gone there for that, and there were none on the few areas open to the plebian public. Traffic was a nightmare, being halted by the presence of the "native" birds in the roads which the the snow birders were loathe to challenge and if necessary, flatten.
Jamaica is a place that should be relegated to the same third world status as Haiti for tourism. Help the poor and suffering if you have the courage but don't go to lay your fat white carcass in the sun and expect to be pampered by a loving and grateful local populace. Thirdly, on a diffewrent note, Branson, Mo is something totally defferent. I spent three days there on a "ugh" bus tour rcently "long story" and was interested to see roads not at all designed for the traffic it receives, shows that occur morning, noon and night and "restaurants"that consist mainly of somewhat tacky buffets. Too much patriotic kitsch at the shows and pretty heavy on the local religion too. We had many non American tourists in our group from countries who also had made ultimate sacrifices to Iraq and total disregard of the fact in the shows "tributes" was embarassing to me and shameful.
Extreme emphasis on selling cd's, pictures, shirts and all such items during intermissions added to my distaste.
On a positive note and the only thing I saw worth the trip was the Shoji Tabuchi show in the theater of the same name with the greatest bathrooms I have ever seen.

For me, it was Nantucket. Maybe not really a "resort" town, but a highly recommended vacation destination. I did not enjoy it much at all and could not see what all the hype was about. I enjoyed my time on Martha's Vineyard MUCH more. Nantucket was just very disappointing and a regret that I used my time there.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It barely qualifies as acceptable. It is dirty, run down, very dangerous and expensive. Restaurants are the same prices as US.

From what I've read here it seems the main problem is crowding at most of the areas. So some of the blame for that has to go to websites like this along with the Travel Channel not to mention the books.
It's getting more difficult to find that spectacular place to vacation that there isn't a crowd already there. The Branson area was mentioned and I'll agree with that as poor planning has made it almost impossible to get around. The last time we were there we rented a cabin by Table Rock Lake and never went towards Branson.

I think all resorts are over rated, I like to travel and experience the local smells and flavors.

I really don't spend a lot of time in resort areas. But ones I have been too that I think are a little overrated would be, WDW and Waikoloa resort area on the BI.

To all of you who answered Myrtle Beach, SC. Who ever said Myrtle Beach was nice? It's a cheap hook up spot for the younger crowd. People go there who want a change from Virginia Beach and Ocean City,MD.

Atlantis by a mile. Overpriced, over-crowded; tacky to the max. Getting a beach chair or a dinner reservation felt like a competition. We went because my wife wanted to go and if they gave me a free week to return, I'd pass.

Second is Sedona. The scenery is very nice, but not "unique," though Sedona-philes like to claim it as such. The town has absolutely nothing to offer.

I'm shocked at all the Maui comments, especially the Four Seasons. I loved Maui and thought the FS was wonderful.

Also, just becuase you stay at a resort does not mean you miss local flavor. Anyone hear of excursions?

Atlantis was the worst vacation I've ever taken. Overpriced. Terrible food. Tried to tell me that my reservation was for the least expensive tower when I knew it was for the middle. Everyone who works there is out for a tip. I don't need help to put a towel on my beach/pool chair, thank you very much. They add a tip on your restaurant bill even when it's only 2 people. And then to add insult to injury, at the airport they charge you to leave and will only accept cash!! I felt like everyone was trying to rip me off at every turn. So many better places to go.
