I'm w/Bill. Outside of Vegas (where you have little choice)I don't stay in resorts. A pool is a pool, regardless of the backdrop. Since we have resort goers on here - what is the attraction?

I've never stayed at a resort, but I have wondered about them. What are the pros and cons?

Dh and I did our first, and last, all inclusive last year. Horrible! They are made for people who want to lay on a beach and never leave the resort. Why even travel? I understand others like them, hey more power to you, but I will never return to one.

Resorts come in all shapes and sizes. Don't think "Sandals" when you think "resort". Please!

We occasionally travel to resorts and they are great places to relax, get a massage, have a quiet dinner, private beach, etc. And if theyr'e located well, you can easily travel in and out to see the local sites. Now that's a resort.

Dolphin pools, water slides, aquariums, meal plans, "socials," "mixers," rock wall, etc. NOW THAT'S SIMPLY A CHEESEY RESORT. Not a good one.

bbt: Sounds like you got locked in your resort and held against your will at gunpoint. Who said just because you do an all-inclusive you can't venture out? We do all the time and still get our money's worth. Not to mention, most AI's we've been to, the food has been good. Please don't generalize and give people false impressions.

Negril - the beach is riding on past reputation alone. No more after all the hurricanes, reef destruction and beach erosion. The resort we stayed at was so very average.

The all-inclusives outside of Playa Del Carmen. Terrible for singles. Full of couples (lazy people who wanted nothing more than to eat, drink, and sit on their butts all day) and families (whining bratty kids). ZERO nightlife unless you take the long taxi ride into town. And the town wasn't all that great...tacky tourist shops that sell a same stuff you can get at tacky tourist shops anywhere else in the world.

How can you say Myrtle Beach is overrated? I don't remember anyone claiming it is a resort area to begin with. Might as well list Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. BTW, i like these places, just wouldn't consider them resorts.

The Pier House in Key West, $400/night for a standard room? It was crazy money for something that I would have paid $100/night elsewhere. Also Disney, always overpriced, it I am paying more than $300/night I want it to be Ocean front or a Ritz Carlton.

What a joke.
Like Opryland gone wild in the Caribbean.

Sandals Dunns River was the biggest waste of $4000 for a week. The rooms and food were not up to par with the cost.

Wow, I'm surprised Lanai made someone's "s" list. I've been pondering that trip for some time now.

Now, I think I'll reconsider.

Walt Disney World Yacht Club. Totally disappointing and too expensive. Even the kids did not like it so that should say it all!
