the grand canyon
I'm planning my annual summer aerobic holiday and this year I am thinking of going to the north rim section of grand canyon and zion nat'l park. I have planned my itinerary already but still have some questions. I hope y'all can help a damsel in distress.
I heard through the office grapevine that there's a restaurant at the entrance of Zion that serves elk and some such other meat? Does anyone know? Also, can anyone suggest at least two hiking trails (fair to medium)for both places? Any response would be greatly appreciated.

At Zion,Angels Landing is rated as a strenuous hike, due to the approach with several switchbacks (Walter's Wiggles)and the ultimate climb to Angels Landing. It's not the exertion, but the narrow trail, that gives this trail its rating. If you don't want to do the final ascent to Angels Landing, you can do the "wiggle" part and watch other hikers as they go to the top point. The view from it is spectacular. Another trail with good views (but again rated strenuous by the NPS guide) is Observation Point. Moderate hikes are Watchman, Hidden Canyon (not for those with fear of heights), and Canyon Heights (do in early a.m. before heat rises.)The park distributes a guide with short descriptions and maps. At North Rim, you can do a portion of the Kaibab Trail. Go early, rested and refreshed, and carry ample water. You're in for some beautiful views! Check www.gorp.com- there's good hiking info there. Sorry, don't know name of the restaurant you seek- try Zion Pasta & Noodle in Springdale for good pasta, pizza and suds.

If you can fit it in consider a visit to Bryce NP. It is less than 100 miles from Zion. In my mind it is one of the most spectacular parks in the national park system. It would be a shame to miss since you will be so close and there are a number of less than strenuous trails.
