Room rates in Vegas
I'm going to Las Vegas in a few weeks and we get to stay for free. The place is the El Cortez. I looked on their website and their rates are $18-48 per night. That seems a bit low. I'm hoping that at least this place is clean with no bugs. It is downtown so maybe that's why it's cheaper. Has anyone ever stayed there or can people reassure me that hotels in Vegas don't have to be expensive to be decent?
Thanks!

I haven't stayed there, and haven't been there very recently but, it is an older property and was always very smoky.
I can definately say it's nothing fancy so just don't go expecting much and you'll probably be O.K.
If you're wanting to see some of the nicer properties you'll end up on the strip alot. Although, we often find gambling downtown much better than the strip so that's a plus.
Downtown the nicest place is the Golden Nugget.
Have fun.

Have you ever been to LV Megan?
What is your budget?
Those are 2 key questions. First off, virtually everyone enjoys the strip immensely more than downtown, and travelling between the 2 is simply a hassle. If you'll be spending your time on the strip, then staying on the strip will make it much easier to enjoy yourself.
If you can't afford $40 for a room, then the free room at El Cortez is a no brainer...you should do it. If you can afford the $$, it's worth it to get a decent room on the strip. Summer rates are a much better deal, you can usually find something under $60 at a decent place. The El Cortez is like a very old, smokey Motel 6.
I say it comes down to budget. For the extra $$ I'll wager your enjoyment will increase immensely at a clean place on the strip. Just my .02

Megan,
If you're looking for a cheap room on the strip try Casino Royale. It's an older property with simple motel-style rooms, but it's right on the strip in the center of the action. I stayed there a couple years ago in the fall and we paid about $50 a night. The casino downstairs is small and smoky, but you don't have to walk through it to get to the elevator up to the rooms. Didn't notice any bugs; it was clean, but a little shabby since it is an old property. Basically it's a steal for the location you get. Have a good trip!

Thanks for the input. It's not that I can't afford anything more or am looking for alternatives. We already have rooms booked at the El Cortez because one of the people I am going with gets rooms for free there. I was just looking for comments from people who have stayed there or know what the rooms are like. I really don't have much of a choice in the matter.
Thanks!

if you want an honest opinion and knowledgeable one go to www.cheapovegas.com and click on El Cortez...they seem pretty right on..do go to the strip and check it out..te buses run to and from the strip and downtown and are easy to navigate or you could split a cab..had to take our car back before our downtown visit and we took the bus from the strip..plenty of people on the bus and it was safe..have a good time..
