The best sunset
Can you tell me about those places where you experienced the best sunsets? What time of the year? I would like to find out also about places in Europe, Africa, and Central America. Should I re-post this question on those forums? I'm almost new to this forum. Thanks

The view from Polihale, Kauai. Watching the sun go down over Niihau. Occasional whale popping out of the surf.
Molokai...from the Kaluakoi's pool sipping a mai tai watching the sun set over Oahu.
Rome..from the cupola of St Pete's Bascilica.360 degree view...Sitting on the Spanish Steps.
Venice..From a sidewalk cafe looking out over the Canale di S. Marco.
"Dali-esque"
Wash DC from the steps of The Lincoln looking back at The George as the Capitol dome lights up and you can pick up the shadows of the flags against The George.
Paris...from the top of the Arc de Triomphe then the Eiffel Tower starts it's light show.
Chicago...the view from the Signature Room at the top of The John.
NYC...Where else but the Empire State building?
SF...From Sausilito looking south. Top of the B of A building, the Carnelian Room or the top of the Hyatt, Cityscapes as the city lights slowly open.
San Diego...Point Loma from the Cabrillo Natl. Monument.
Santa Fe...From the Radisson looking back down over the city and high desert.
Wow....better stop now or I'll want to go back to all of those places
again!

Thank you for all those specific places you listed. This is exactly what I had in mind. My husband and I travel often and we found that even if a weather is not the best, hotel only OK, and food so so but when we can relax in the end of the day by sitting (or standing) silently watching sunset it makes a big difference. Everything starts to look much better and we are ready to plan our next trip. So here we are thinking where should we go next year and year after that. I agree that the sunset at the Grand Canyon (North Rim in late May) was the most spectacular. But nothing wrong also with the one in Kenya in Lewa Downs Camp in Late June, over Lake Champlain from Shelburne Museum in Burlington, VT in July, Montana's Many Glacier Lodge last July, and Paris' Eiffel Tower. Kal, we are going to Rome in March so I will check St. Peter's Bascilica and the Spanish Steps. Thank you and please keep them coming.

Mona, I think you hit it right on the head when you said that no matter what your day was like, watching the sun set at the end of it is a wonderful relaxation. I think taking the time to watch ANY sunset can inspire you.
For that reason, I'll say that watching the sun set from our Lake Huron property with the Mackinac Bridge visible just in front of the spectacular colors can't be beat. Take the time to enjoy where you are right now.

It is charming how people get all excited about sunsets in the Caribbean. We've seen some beauties from Negril Beach. However it always seems that within days of our return to Maryland, we'll catch an extraordinary one just at the "end of our street." When the clouds are just right and the sky turns orange, red, pink and purple, and clouds glow that incredible golden just before they turn blue....I have to stay the best we've seen have been at home!

My boyfriend and I were driving through Death Valley in September and we stumbled upon people gathering at Zabriskie Point to watch the sun set. It was gorgeous, and the surreal setting made it interesting.
Cape Cod also has some fantastic sunsets...really, any place where the sun sets over water is going to be good.

Two places
Brennickes Beach in Poipu, Kauai. Locals gather on the rocks, drink rum punch and watch th most beautiful sunset on the planet
Mallory Square in Key West. Totally overdone now, but you have to experience the scene once. Plus, the sunset is good as well.

Although I have been to far more exotic places with great sunsets, the one most spectacular that I remember was in Michigan. Looking out to the west from
a small town near the Silver Lake sand dune area you can see a "lagoon" that is an inlet/ bay in the foreground with lake (Michigan) and sand dune meeting in semi-circles at the sides. It started as a brilliant red ball sinking into this semi-circle of blue and white with shadows of a lone canoer at quite a distance in the foreground. It then became fragmented with reflections of itself in the water as it "sizzled" into that water and over the horizon. I have seen some breath taking ones over the prairie also- but that particular Michigan summer night one really stays with me.

Nice question, Mona. Lori, I used to live in Cheboygan, MI and have seen my fair share of gorgeous sunsets in that area, a few while enjoying the drive while coming up on the Mackinac Bridge. Other sunsets I've particularly enjoyed were in the Carmel/Monterey/Big Sur, CA area, and the Gulf side beaches of FL. The most spectacular one ever, though, was in Trinidad, CA, at the top of the lookout - just the right mixture of clouds, the waves crashing, rocks jutting out of the water, etc. It was absolutely breathtaking and one of the many times I could kick myself in the behind for not having my camera with me.

I'm surprised and pleased that so many people have mentioned sunsets in Michigan. I have very fond memories of sunsets all along Lake Michigan, from Holland all the way up to Traverse Bay, Petoskey, etc.
The best sunsets I have ever seen were in Costa Rica at a wonderful hotel called Villa Caletas. We were there in November.
