When we stay at the ritz Carlton - on the border of being too far away from the river there was an armed guard in the lobby (which I have seen before only in Mexico city) and we were told in no uncertain terms NOT to turn left when leaving the hotel - even in groups -

I had wondered why the RITZ was cheaper than other properties we had considered...thankfully I find them way too stuffy from past experience, so passed.

The big event on Thanksgiving day in New Orleans is the season opening of the Fairgrounds racetrack. Lots of the old time families go so the atmosphere is more Ascot than Yonkers. I didn't get a chance to go when I lived there but my sources report great people watching opportunities plus the food there is pretty good (at least compared to your typical sports venue fare).

Thanks everyone for the heads up about being safe. I will travel smart and use common sense. I think that is a must whenever you're traveling no matter where you go.
But on a less serious note.....time is ticking.....getting close to my holiday to NOLA! YAY!
But now I gotta look into where to have my yummy Thanksgiving dinner and get those reservations in! =D

I'm back!!! LOVED NOLA! The food was fantastic! Everyone's suggestions and recommendations were spot on! And Thanksgiving Day wasn't bad at all in NOLA. I was worried that everything would be closed and I'd be wandering the streets of closed shops. It turned out a lot of shops were opened and some of course, were closed. The carriages with horses were operating and so there were some tours that were going on. I was able to check in and drop off my luggage before the usual check-in time so that worked out great! Spent an entire day at the WWII museum! I am looking forward to going back soon especially after the expansion of the museum! Thanks everyone who helped me out! =)
