Texas State Fair
Can anyone tell me if the Texas State Fair is worth making a trip for? I'd like to do so this October, as there is an exhibit I really want to go to, but I've never been to a State Fair, and I'm thinking that I might want to spend an extra day or two in Dallas to check it out.
Thanks!

I've lived in Dallas for 20 years and have only missed the Fair a few times. Its the largest State Fair in the country. They have everything from concerts to auto shows and a HUGE midway. And plenty of buildings with tons of things to buy and look at. I've always enjoyed it and every year they have new events. Check texfair.com for a schedule of events.

Actually, yes --- think it may be the biggest State Fair in the country (or certainly, in the top 3).
I'm originally from New England, and have lived in Texas for quite a few years. Still get a kick out of the Fair. They offer up everything from livestock show, cooking & quilting contests, to auto show (newest models) and I think they may still have the pig races (???). It's worth spending a extra day to experience this slice of Americana culture.
Another site to check out as the time draws near is thru the Dallas Morning News ---

and it should have current info on what's happening at State Fair.

www.texfair.com is theState Fair of Texas website. It has schedules, attractions, and important things like where to buy discount admission!
I compete in the Creative Arts every year, so here are a few hints:
1. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You will be walking a LOT. Most of the buildings are air conditioned, but the plazas and outdoors areas (75% of the Fair) are not. Drink plenty of water.
2. Don't plan on staying near the Fair Park. This is one of Dallas' WORST neighborhoods (but there are tons of Police inside the fairgrounds). I recommend staying somewhere downtown and taking the Fair Flyer bus over from the Pearl Street light rail station. I know there are an Amerisuites and a Hampton Inn rightnear the West End rail station that would work well, or the Le Meridien by the Pearl station.
3. Avoid the Fiar on weekends, Mondays and Fridays. I recommend going on Tues-Thurs to beat the crowds.
Have fun!
