Texas Hill Country

Hi! Please see my other post about San Antonio during spring break....

What is there to do in Hill Country outside of San Antonio? Are there farms or ranches or something to visit? What about parks? Thanks for any info!

The most common places to go are:

- Fredericksburg. Many antiques and craft shops; German food; Nimitz musuem

- LBJ ranch tour.

- Enchanted Rock state park - hiking.

There are also peach orchards everywhere. But I don't think it's peach season.

There are lots of dude ranches in Bandera, which is just an hour's drive from San Antone. I've never been to one, but a search here should yield some recommendations. LBJ's ranch is in Johnson City and is well-known for its wildflower research center. Most of the working ranches in the area don't do tours.

SHOPPING is a big pastime in the Hill Country. Fredricksburg is well-known for its shopping! It is also home of the Nimitz Museum, if you are into WW2 and history.

Enchanted Rock is awesome to see. There are also tame deer there that will eat out of your hand! For more state parks in the area, see www.tpwd.state.tx.us and look under Hill Country. Lost Maples is a beautiful state park in the Hill Country.

There are also LOTS of caves in the Hill Country. Natural Bridge, Longhorn, Inner Space, etc. Natural Bridge also has a drive-though safari if I'm remembering correctly.

Nope, it's not peach season. That's in the fall. ;-)

Go to New Braunfelds (?) to the huge water park there..Schittlebran, or something like that. We went to the caverns and then drove through their African Safari park and had a ball feeding the animals out of our car.
Do go to LBJ ranch and Heritage Farm, both are very interesting.

Take a boat tour of Canyon Lake. Go to Llano to a wonderful Bar-B Que place there..someone will tell you the name. Drive along the Guadalupe River for scenery and tubing. Have fun.

Personally, I'd skip Llano. To me not that interesting and not worth the 2-3 hour drive from SA. Fredrickburg - yes. Quaint, great shopping, nice drive.

The Natural Bridge Caverns in New Braunfels is what mamajo was referring to. They have an animal farm as well.

Here's a website I just found on the Hill country:

The highs this week are only in the 70s!I seriously doubt that Schlitterbahn will be open in mid-March, especially since it is fed with water from the COLD Comal River. Ditto with river tubing. Those are both great activities for cooling off in the hot Texas summer.

Schitterbahn is an incredibly fun thing to do. It's located in New Braunsfuls, not far from SA. Also, if you're looking for more adult, Texas-style fun, I insist you go to Gruene, TX (pronounced Green), which is just past New Braunsfels, and stay at a cute B & B (Antoinette's Cottage is my choice), eat at the Gristmill restaurant overlooking the beautiful Guadalupe River, then head to the famous Gruene Dance Hall for legendery Texas country that's different every night. A true Texas experience!
