Yesterday I was talking to one of my college age grand daughters about her recent camping trip through the southwest with her family. They covered a lot of ground, encompassing all or most of the tourist attractions in southern Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. (Yes, it was super hot). They hit Austin, San Antonio, and Houston , visiting all the popular destinations in those places, before returning home via the Grand Canyon, to their home in Los Angeles. Many natural and man-made wonders on that trip.

I asked her for just a couple of things that she found most memorable on the trip, expecting to hear something like Carlsbad Caverns or the River Walk. But her immediate response was "how nice all the Texans were". Just thought you Texans would like to know how a 100% California girl feels about you folks.

I recently took my first trip to Texas - I am a CA girl too, from the Bay Area no less AND a football and hockey fan, so you KNOW I have an inbred bias against Texas to begin with But I must agree - just about everybody I met was quite friendly and helpful. You guys rock, although I will retract that statement as soon as hockey season starts.

Texans are more than nice.

They are weird.

Here in Europe, we have gotten a completely misleading picture of Texas by the tv show "Dallas" and W. We were glad that we had the opportunity to see real Texas recently. Our favourite weird places were Terlingua, Luckenbach and Grüne.

That's awesome - thanks! It's funny to us when we go to other places and no one smiles at you on the street or says good morning to you. I think even the big cities in Texas are pretty friendly.

That's very nice and thanks so much for posting that. I'm not a native Houstonian but have lived here long enough to feel some pride in how others perceive "Texans".

I don't live in Texas, but everytime I travel there I think about the friendly people I've met.

volcanogirl.. I really liked my recent trip to Montreal, Quebec City, and Tadoussac. But, I was surprised that people didn't give eye contact on the streets, smile, or say hi! Only one elderly man my last night in Montreal spoke to me and asked if I needed any help and we started a short conversation about the space shuttle (carrying Canadians this recent launch!). I moved to TX when I was a teenager and call it home and proud to do so! Thank you dbdurand for the compliment!

This thread makes me think to write a trip report about our trip to Texas last Christmas...

Who could disagree? I think Texans are just about the friendliest people on the planet. I'm from California and think that California natives are pretty nice but nothing compared to Texans.

kk, when we were in Boston I really noticed it. People were really helpful if we asked, but no eye contact and no greetings on the street. I have a friend from up north and she said only crazy people will talk to strangers and smile at them - lol. We thanked one bus driver for his help, and he said, "Well, don't tell nobody!"

I grew up in CA, but moved to Texas in the late 1990's after going to college with a bunch of crazy people who all had Texas flags hanging in their windows. I was so confused by all of that Texas love they were always spouting. It's a state, for goodness sakes, not a religion.
When I first got here, my mom and I went around "setting up shop" for my new life. People kept asking, "How are you doing?" and waiting for a response. It really threw us off. I kept thinking, "Are they trying to distract me while someone else picks my pocket?" LOL.
Now I know the truth that really, Texans are lovely people. They do have a lot of state pride and it's sweet. I married a Texan and am raising my own little Texans now.
I'm glad that your granddaughter got to see our great state. It's certainly very different.
