Test: no reply necessary...

In case you are reading this, I just wanted to test the "preview" feature, before I spent an hour typing a trip report. I tried this feature once before, and my message went "poof" -- or, at least, I couldn't figure out what to do. (I was kinda blonde as a child.) I just want to make sure I know what to do B4 I try to do it.

Hey! It worked! I guess maybe my computer screen just froze the other time. It figures.

I've lost a few messages when I went to the "preview my reply" screen. I've sense learned to highlight and copy any long messages before I preview.

If you are worried about losing a message, type it in Word, save it, and copy and paste it here. Then if it goes "poof," you have a copy so you can try again.

jimshep,

Yeah, but then it does that funky thing where it replaces all the " ' ... s with ?s.

I was wondering where those marks came from and why I had to be careful to write "do not" rather than "don't"--for instance.

But but, I have to reply!!

I find that I should use the preview function all the time, since it never fails that I make some sort of stupid typo or spelling error~

jimshep,
I think it's because Word automatically turns them into Smart Quotes. By the way, you can turn that function off or just revert them back to straight ones by hitting Ctrl Z immediately after typing the quote mark in Word.

I couldn't help but reply, also.

I have typed trip reports in my email program (Outlook Express) and never had that problem with question marks scattered throughout. It copied and pasted just as it looked when I typed it. Just another suggestion.

Well, shoot, now I have to reply, too, Donna, since you DID ask us not to! (Do you have on sock with your sandals today?)

bonnie: I have on socks with my tennis shoes today. The sandals (w/o socks) almost rubbed blisters on my feet during our vacation. Actually, as a person who lives with pets, I find wearing socks, even without shoes, is always an advantage. Bare feet are nothing but a magnet for pet-hair, chicken-bone splinters, hairballs, and occasionally, worse. And yes, I do have a vacuum cleaner, but I spend so much time on Fodor's that I don't have time to use it everyday.

The "smart quotes" option in Word replaces straight quotes with curly ones. The curly ones then translate into question marks on Fodors.

If you go to "Tools" then "AutoCorrect Options" then click on the "AutoFormat as You Type Tab" the first set of options "replace as you type" cause problems with Fodors.

The replace straight quotes with smart quotes comes out as question marks. "Ordinals with superscript," "hyphens with dash" and "replacing fractions with a character" all throw Fodors for a loop. You can un-check these items and type care free in Word then copy and paste.

hahahaha...

This is funnier than "Aiche-EEEE-double hockey sticks".

I typed a few replies recently and instead of hitting "edit" I hit "back" and it disappeared...twice!

And then later when I went to reply again since they disappeared, typed the new message, hit "preview" and there they both were but it wasn't showing in the main message list...if that makes ANY sense whatso... :-?
