telluride in the summer

For a trip to Telluride later this summer (we've never been, even in winter), we're trying to decide between staying up the mountain in the ski village (where there are plentiful condo accomodations) or in the town of Telluride itself. Our thinking is that up the mountain it will be quieter with views, but also it could be kind of a condo ghetto. In town, more charcater but maybe touristy. Any suggestions? Thanks!

We stayed at the Ice House near the slopes and we loved it. The room was large, and b/c it was "off season" was half-price.

No way are there any "ghetto" areas in the mountain ski village. There are shops and restaurants there but none of the Telluride character. It's also a good ways from town. Luckily, there is a free tram service.

Telluride is a small town and I've never considered it noisy but it is touristy.

Consider a Jeep trip over Imogene Pass or Black Bear Pass (much scarier). You'll really get a feel for the old mining area with breathtaking mountain scenery.

We stayed in town a few years ago and would highly recommend it. Your surrounded by the mountains anyways, have easier access to checking out the town and can take the free gondola up the mountain and over to the other villages. Depends on when you go but we didn't find it really touristy at all.

telluride has only been a ski town for a few years. its history is in mining and there is still a working mine up the valley. i would definetly stay in town. it has so much personality. old victorian houses. the view is stunning.
the jeep tours would be a great excursion. also horseback tours, mtn biking, or try a balloon ride or glider w/tandem instructor, or white water rafting.
if you haven't already check out www.tellurideskiresort.com for a couple pictures and other info

mountain village is resort made village, yes the views are great but the real character is in town. you can always take the tram up. I absolutely loved the Queen Anne B&B great food, hot tub on the roof.... walk to everywhere in town. i didn't move my car for 4 days
