Tell me, is Route 66 (in Arizona) worth the time?

We're heading to Arizona next weekend and DH wants to take a drive to Route 66. I've read that parts are located in Arizona (we're staying in Phoenix).

If we make the drive, what can we expect to see and find?

Thanks!

Arizona has one of the few remaining original bits of Rte 66. If you Google Route 66 Arizona you will find lots of sites which will tell you all about it, including turn by turn descriptions of the route.
We enjoyed the Arizona section a lot, especially as it was nice to be nowhere near an interstate for a change.

Are you going somewhere and considering taking Rt66 or are you talking about making a day trip from Phoenix to drive it and then back to Phoenix?

If it will be on your route from Phoenix to somewhere or somewhere to Phoenix, why not take it? But if you are thinking about a day trip, forget it. That's a lot of driving to see desert.

First of all you will have to go up to Flagstaff to pick up Rt 66 which is a 2 hour drive. DH and I took the whole trip from Chicago to Santa Monica Ca afew years back. There is alot to see on the Rt. It runs from Lupton, Holbrook, through the Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Joseph City, Winslow, Flagstaff, Seligman (absolute stop), all the way to Needles,Ca.Kingman and Oatman also a must. Alot of old buildings, drive-ins, motels on and on. Go to the Route 66 web site as stated, you can get all the info plus turn by turn driving directions. I spent over four months planing and was gone a month. And Az really did have the most original to see. Great trip.

We were thinking of a day trip from Pheonix and back, but if I can figure out a "destination" that would be even better.

I just finished reading sms' trip report. Deb, I look forward to reading yours as well.

Since I am not *directionally inclined*, I will have to get my husband involved in this. At the moment, he is preoccupied with the Scottsdale car auction (he's been watching the auction until 2 am everynight and hounding me about it, lol). I don't want a car as a souvenir!!
