Appreciate your posts, everyone! She is 18, and has travelled in this country and some in Mexico and Europe, but always with family or on a school trip. She is responsible and level-headed, and won't forget her driver's license and will probably take her laptop. She booked the tickets, and based on the cheap fare she told me, I'm guessing she can't change to a later flt, which would make things easier! I called carmel car service, which is recommended often here, and they guessed a car from POK to LGA would be $158, plus tolls, tip. That's outside her budget for this trip. So I guess it's the train, and some more calls from me, the mom, so she remembers to change her watch on Sat. night!

Vassar College is in Poughkeepsie and the only reason I mention this is usually, on a college web site (likely - vassar.edu) - under "admissions/visiting" they usually have detailed information on every possible way to get to and from with appropriate links, maps, services, trains, buses, taxis to transportation centerrs, etc, etc. - maybe that would help you

Very good idea Escargot...

Vassar will probabley have all the details an 18 year old would need, since that's their target audience!

Makes sense now. When you said teen, I was thinking 14 or 15.

You said in your original post she hadn't traveled much.

For the limited time for everything on Sunday, would it be better to take MetroNorth to 125th St and take taxi or car service from there?

I've never used the 125th station, but are there people around early in the morning that can answer questions for her in case she needs directions, etc.? Grand Central definitely will, but not sure about 125th St.

I would only consider 125 st. that early on a Sun. morning if you arranged for a car service to pick her up AND she had a cell phone with her (with the car service number etc.). It would be a lot closer to LGA but might be a bit deserted at that hour.

Thanks escargot and everyone. I will tell her to look at the Vassar website for info.Sorry, GoTravel, I meant she hadn't traveled alone, without adults to sort out any difficulties. Good to know about the 125th St. station, tho maybe it's too deserted at her early hour. I'm grateful for all your help, fodorites!!

I am sure that your daughter handled all the transfers and such confidently and with poise. I congratulate you, eeyann, for being such a trusting mother. It is refreshing to see that parents have a trusting relationship with their children. She sounds like a lovely person, as do you.
