TCKTS Advice

I'm going to NYC from April 16 - 19th. How does the TCKTS booth in Times Square work? Should I take the chance to get tickets to a musical there or should I buy them in advance? We'd see just about anything -- we'd really like to see The Chorus Line.

You never really know what's going to be available on any given day. I'm sure someone here can tell you if "A Chorus Line" is appearing or not. You're almost certain to get something, and if you want to pay almost half-price, then this may be you only option. However, if you register at www.playbill.com, you can get pretty good discounts on a wide range of shows and can then buy your tickets in advance. However, I just checked, and "A Chorus Line" is not offered on Playbill. The other thing to consider is that you might get better seats by booking in advance. I guess it depends on whether or not you're willing to pay $100+ for your Broadway experience.

Rather than the tired old A Chorus Line, consider Spring Awakening. It's new and very good.

As the above post said, there is never any sure way to tell what will be offered at the TKTS booth.

You can get an idea of what is likely to be there by checking the Playbill site and looking on the left for Broadway Grosses. Shows that are consistently playing to low capacity will be offering tickets to get people in.

Be sure to check the postings for a couple of weeks to see the trend as any show can have a temporary spike due to holidays, change in cast, etc. Again it's no guarantee, but just shows you what the probabilities are.

You can also use Broadwaybox.com for theater discounts. At the moment there aren't any Chours Line discounts. But there probably will be soon (week or two). Nice show.

Here's a site for the listings of what TKTS generally has available. It does show some Chorus Line availability.
You can also register free and then access actual availability day by day.

But also note, that this list is never a "given". Although it has never shown WICKED, someone here insisted that their friends did get half price tickets for WICKED at TKTS a few weeks ago for a Tuesday night.

I think it depends on how mnay you are and how fussy you are about where the seats are. The cheapest option is at the TKTS booth. You could also print off discount pages of shows that interest you from broadwaybox.com and take those directly to the theater when you arrive. You'd get that price minus the transaction fees you pay when you buy online. If there are a lot of you, you might want to buy in advance. I think you'd have a good shot at Chorus Line. Just keep in mind Chorus Line and many others don't have Mon. performances but there are Wed. matinees. I happened to see Chorus Line at a Wed. matinee with a TKTS ticket. I sat on the aisle in the first row of the mezzanine! But 1 ticket is always easier than 2 or more.

And sometimes a few really good tickets are released to TKTS 30 minutes before show time.

Their website tells you all about it: www.tdf.org/tkts including what shows have been up the past week. that gives you a general idea, but is no guarantee about what will be up when you're there.

There are two locations, with somewhat diffrent hours.

You should use www.broadwaybox.com and have your tickets for the days you want in hand. Note the discounts on many shows.

The lines at the Times Square booth are outrageous and beyond my patience. I buy my tickets down at the South Street Seaport booth. Chorus Line is regularly on the lists. The good thing about the SS location is that it has matinees for the next day also. And I've rarely had to wait longer than 20 minutes, even on a Saturday morning. Suggest that you have your top three picks ready when you get to the "agent". And have cash - the closest cash machine that I recall is a Chase at the Duane Reade across Front Street.

Also, the South Street Seaport office opens at 11:00, whereas the Times Square location doesn't open until 3:00. Know what you want because the ticket agent will move on to the next patron if you take too long.

We got in line on a Saturday morning an hour or so before South Street Seaport TKTS opened - we were maybe 15th in line. My mom got coffee and a paper and then joined me. It wasn't a bad wait, it was a lovely day, and we had a nice time talking to the people around us. And, we got the show we wanted.

The line was pretty long by 11:00 on Saturday, and when we asked the TKTS staff member how long it would take for the people at the end of the line to get tickets, he said it would take about an hour. So, I was glad that we waited an hour before it opened, instead of an hour after. But the only reason we waited was because our show did not have a discount on broadwaybox.com or playbill.

Anyways, enjoy NYC and the show!

I also second the suggestion of going to the South St. Seaport to get your tickets, that's where the locals go for tickets, and I have never waiting longer than 30 minutes, where the wait in Times Square could be hours. Why waste your time in line when you could be out exploring more.

At the South St. Seaport you are walking distance to Wall St, Century 21, and all the downtown sites, all to your left on Water ST. If you go right on Water St you are heading toward Chinatown and Little Italy.

Have a great time while you are here.

Question: would the TKTS booth have tickets to Les Miserables available? I know that nobody can predict this for certainty, but I would like to know if there is at least a possibility of the TKTS having tickets to the show....

Thanks!

There is strong liklihood you could get Les Miz at TKTS. tdf.org/tkts will show you what's been available there lately. You could also buy discount tix in advance for Les Miz using a discount code from
http://broadwaybox.com/shows/les_mis...c_tickets.aspx

Your chances for getting tickets for Les Miserables at TKTS are excellent.
However, I'd take advantage of the discount offer on broadwaybox.com ($60 for Tuesday thru Thursday performances; $65 for Friday night, Saturday and Sunday matinees). It's only about $10-15 more per ticket and you don't have to wait in line. Just run off a copy of the offer and take it with you to the box office as soon as you arrive in NYC.
Still, if you want to get the cheaper tickets, then go to TKTS, where, as I said, your chances are excellent.

There is a promotion running at
http://www.seasonofsavings.com/shows/on_broadway
with deep discounts on a lot of Brodway shows, including tix for Les Mis at $31.50 and $51.50. There are 16 shows listed now.

We saw Spamalot and Curtains on this deal.
