Tanglewood
We are planning on going to the concerts there on August 21 and August 22. It sounds very appealing to get lawn tickets and sit out and picnic. But if it rains can we buy tickets there to go inside or if we buy indoor tickets for the concert hall and it is a lovely evening can we just stay outside?

When we were there in Aug, it was so hot inside that we went outside during the second half of the concert. It is open sided and just covered ..but with the sun and no wind, can be very uncomfortable in the late summer if there is a hot spell like we tended to run into.
As far as I know you can buy tickets for inside and go outside if you wish - but if you don't buy tickets for the inside and it rains, I don't believe you can just go inside..
go to the Tanglewood website, they will probably have all your answers there

The "Shed" has broad eaves, particularly in back. When it rains, people with lawn tickets often get under shelter there, but you have to stand. Even on sellout days, there are often last minute shed tickets available. If it looks like rain, you can get there early and try for them.

fiomar,
You definitely can buy tickets for the Shed and then sit outside if you like. However, there is a large difference in ticket price. You can also purchase tickets once you get there and decide then if you want to sit in the Shed or on the lawn. Be aware though that other people will be doing the same. Another option is to buy Shed tickets and picnic on the lawn first. You must have a ticket for a reserved seat in the Shed.
If it is not important for you to see the concert, sitting on the lawn is very nice and you can hear just fine.

did you really mean August 21st and 22nd, which are not the weekend?
The concerts during the week on those days, are scheduled to be inside Seiji Ozawa Hall. Ozawa hall is a lovely, smaller concert hall where the sides open up on nice days to be mostly open air. there is no lawn seating in the hall.
If your dates are different, and you will be there to see the BSO over the weekend, then yes, you can buy shed tickets and sit on the lawn. And yes, the price differential is quite large. It is also true that the shed does not always sell out, so it is possible to decide at the last minute if the weather is bad. However, a couple caveats: if the weather is bad, many other who were going to sit on the lawn may have the same idea, you might want to go early.
Also, some popular soloists WILL sell out the shed. These would include Itzhak Perhlman and YoYo Ma.
personally, I really like sitting on the lawn for evening concerts. it is cooler, and we can spread out a bit, and drink some wine. They have giant monitors overhead now, so you can often see the soloists there. (I'm not sure they use the monitor for all concerts).
I'm not crazy about the lawn for the Sunday afternoon concerts. It can be very hot in the sun (there are a few shady spots). And the audience is far more distracted and distracting. there will be more kids running around, more crinkling of newspapers. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I think its great that parents take the kids to Tanglewood on Sundays. Its a great way to get them to listen to a little bit of classical music. But they can get noisy and its much harder to pay attention to the concert.)
