Tampa: rent a car or public transportation?

Tampa: rent a car or public transportation?
We will be flying into the St. Petersberg/Tampa Bay airport and will stay in Tampa. Should we rent a car or use public transportation to get around? We are also thinking of staying in Clearwater for a couple days. So, the same question...or could we rent a car just when we want to travel to Clearwater or are there other ways of getting there (more economical, convenient)? Thanks!

The most convenient and economical way of getting around the Tampa Bay area is by car, absolutely no question. Public transportation is primitive at best. Enjoy your visit!

Car, certainly. Public transportation in the TB area is not an option. Enjoy your stay!
