Tampa Area at Christmas

I have searched the boards and can't seem to find the information I am looking for. We were plannning on a trip to the Keys for Christmas but we got some great airfare deals to fly into Tampa. We have never vacationed in this area and I have a couple of questions. We like the beach, warmth, walking the dog, eating great food, having happy hour drinks at fun bars, some shopping - no real interest in nightlife. We did Kiawah Island in South Carolina this past Christmas and it wasjust too quiet.
I have looked at some condos on Sanibel, Captiva, etc....but I am just overwhelmed with which area I should look in. We don't want a deserted "island" with nothing going on. Please offer some advice! Thanks in advance!

I think Captiva and Sanibel are going to be pretty quiet at that time of year.

Are you familiar with kayak.com to search for airfares?

You say you don't want "night life" but "great food, having happy hour drinks at fun bars," = nightlife you probably won't find there.

I bet you'd love South Beach or Ft Lauderdale area.

Maybe Naples? It may have more of the mix you are looking for.

Sarasota might fit the bill. Look into Longboat Key or Lido Key, although keep in mind that this area won't be quite as warm as the Keys in December.
