Not sure about your dates, but my friend and I are staying at Hampton Inn in Crystal City for around $100 a night from May 27-31. I just booked it a few days ago. We have a 1 bedroom suite that is 2 separate rooms. That would be nice for you and your grandson. According to the website the hotel is about 2 blocks from the metro station. This was the best price we could find for a 2 room suite. I had previously booked at Homewood Suites in Alexandria, but it was not as close to the metro and the price was higher.

There aren't a lot of choices without a car if you want to be within walking distances of most stuff. It has to be around the Mall. I'd suggest the George, the Hyatt Regency down on Capitol Hill on NJ Ave, the Marriott near metro center, or the Monaco near the Am Art Museum.
