Surfing Lessons

Has anyone taken surfing lessons on Oahu? We are going to Hawaii in two weeks and my husband would like to take beginners lessons. Any suggestions on who we should book them with?

there are public surfboard rentals on waikiki beach and the waves there are small enough to learn on. I think you can probably sign up for lessons there as well. If you want to go somewhere other than crowded Waikiki, look in the yellow pages when you get there or ask your hotel if they offer lessons or know of a company that does. There are quite a few, you shouldn't have trouble finding one.

My husband and I went through a company www.hawaiianfire.com. It is a surfing school on Oahu that is run by firefighters. It was on the expensive side, but a great way to learn to surf away from all the crowds.

For a memorable lesson, just get one of the senior Waikiki beachboys to teach you. They're near the Duke Kahanamoku statue on the beach everyday...the truly classic way to learn to surf.

Is getting up on the board very difficult?, let's say for someone who is used to skiing, my son and husband would like to try but are adverse to lessons for some reason.
