sunday brunch

I already have reservations for sunday brunch
at the View on top of the Mariott.
i have been told that the Sunday brunch at the Rainbow room also provides a wonderful view. Please provide me with some feedback as to which location you think is better.
i am more concerned with the view than the food.

You obviously did not get the memo on how to travel inexpensively. Brunch is the most expensive meal for dining out! Eggs, ham, and OJ in pretty glasses, for $29.95. I worked in restaurants all through college and almost NEVER go out to eat. Too expensive and too dirty (behind the scenes). Anyway, I think the view probably is nice.

The view from the Rainbow Room is infinitely more spectacular than the view from the top of Marriott Marquis. One other alternative is atop the Rhiga Royal, which has quite a spectacular view as well. We went there once to check it out for brunch (were thinking about the following week) and chose not to do it however. It looked very crowded and the buffet seemed very unattractive. But the view was special. Strictly for view, you couldn't beat the Rainbow Room now that the World Trade Center is gone.

And just for the record Chris, I don't recall Shamrock mentioning anything about price. Maybe she or he "did get the memo", but perhaps is trying to do a special trip, not a cheapie. Sure, one could eat cheap, that wasn't the question.

Make this place work for you. Include the name of the place where you are interested in the subject.

Most people are never even going to look at this message. They have no idea what part ot the contry you are even considering.

Gee, "Duh" so far 3 people including myself know EXACTLY what country and even the city Shamrock is talking about.

From the 2 choices you have listed, Rainbow Room would have the better view. Are you open to other suggestions that would not have a "great" view but would have better food? I have heard that Cafe Mozart serves a brunch, maybe someone can comment if they have had brunch there? What about a brunch at one of the more elegant hotels like the Pierre or the Plaza?

Thank you everyone for these suggestions.
The Price is not my concern
i am from the South. I strickly am interested in a "view" for my photos.
i have preciously done the brunch at Windows on the World and my photos are just irreplacable !!
am open to any suggestions but based on the posts i have read so far i am leaning toward changing my reservations to the Rainbow Room.
A Friend just called me and mentioned that since the WTC is no longer there
the view from the Rainbow Room is just GRAND!!
Thanks again for all your responses !!

Guess you have a smart friend. Glad the friend agrees with me.

Please, everyone, don't take duh's suggestion the wrong way. The suggestion is that the title of the post should include New York, so readers will know whether it is something they are likely to want to respond to or not. I think it was a valid suggestion and offered nicely. The point wasn't that once a reader opens up the post and reads it he wouldn't know where it was, but rather, make the title work for you.

Shamrock, definitely go to the Rainbow Room for brunch. The view and ambiance is fabulous. The brunch is available on Sunday, costs $55 with a glass of Champagne and an all-you-can-eat buffet.

You want view? Take the ferry from the west side of Manhattan (W. 38th St.) over to Weehawken, NJ and have brunch at the Chart House. (You may need to take a short cab ride from the ferry to the restaurant, or you can walk if you don't mind the hike.) On a clear day you'll have a view of the skyline from the George Washington Bridge to the Statue of Liberty.

And the food will be good too.

(Both have websites: Chart House is either charthouse.com or chart-house.com, and the ferry is www.nywaterway.com)

Flynn,

Any suggestions on what the appropriate dress for the rainbow room Sunday brunch is?

Sunday Church attire. The Rainbow Room is not a casual place.

What a waste. I can't believe some of you "buy" into all of this. Go to a reasonable place to eat and donate the remainder to your favorite charity. Eating at those kinds of places is like throwing your $$ out the car window. Go work in a soup kitchen for an afternoon!

Frugal, what an ass. What about all the people that work in those places that have to make a living?

There will NEVER be a shortage of people that will go to those types of places. Some to flaunt others just wanna bees! Just MHO. Incidentally, I can well afford to frequent places such as those, but choose not to. Perhaps that is why I can afford it. Additionally, most of the people that you see dining at those over-priced/rated restaurants are very FRUMPY!!! Something I avoid at all costs!!!

Let me add that I used to work, during college, at an up-scale restaurant in a large city. I used to watch in horror as the "critically acclaimed" chef's nose would drip into the food!!! My motto: Eat at HOME!!

frugal ([email protected]): Your nasty post has nothing to do with travel and is not at all helpful to Shamrock. hopefully Fodor's will delete your ramblings. Also, I'm very glad that you avoid these types of Brunch places because none of us want to share a meal with you!

Dear Frugal,

You seem really good at lecturing people. Have you considered a career as a Sunday school teacher?

Kim, I called the Rainbow Room to find out about the dress code for Sunday brunch: jacket for men; no sneakers/no jeans for men or women; pants allowed for women.

Frugal: the Rainbow Room is not something one goes to every day. It's a splurge and a luxury and sometimes doing something just a little bit extravagant is good for one's soul - especially when on vacation. I bet people who dined at Windows on the World (myself included) at the World Trade Center are very glad they did in the past.

Just because Frugal said so, I'm not going to do it any longer.

Frugal, following the logic of your argument, no one should ever wear nice clothes, drive a nice car, eat a nice meal, own nice jewelry, live in a nice house, etc., etc., etc., and they should then donate all the extras to charity. Yeah, that sounds good in an altruistic kind of way, but not very realistic. By the way, I assume you practice what you preach?
